Of interest to P-51 fans

While looking for something else, I came upon this site that has a lot of very interesting, and sobering, photos of Mustangs on Iowa Jima. Some B-29s too. By Life magazine photographer(s) I think.

Picasa Web Albums - Mark - Iwo Jima

Not LIFE photos as far as I know. Mark Stevens of www.7thfighter.com put that album up. A lot of those photos are from the National Archives, while many more are from the veterans who served in the 7th Fighter Group. I've met Mr. Stevens and several members of the 45th fighter squadron including a close friend who's story is partially told in the film The League of Grateful Sons. Because of that friend, I've been interested in those Iwo (and 45th FS in particular) bird for a while. Once won an auction on Ebay and temporarily owned a number of pictures and letters. Found the son of the guy who originally owned them and now he has them including the flag (huge, beautiful, and pristine) flown by the 45th FS over Iwo Jima on VJ day. I kind of wish I'd have kept that particular item.

One of the photos I used to have in my possession.

what a fantastic collection!!

If you haven't seen "Flags of Our Fathers", I think its worth seeing.
But what is really cool, is Clint Eastwood filmed it all on Iwo Jima.
So looking through those photos, I actually recognized the place and terrain and felt some sort of weird connection.
