Thanks, Richard! I love thisdevelopmental era of odd attempts at gunboats, torpedo boats and submarines and I think it's under modeled in all media, so I'm glad to see Renova picking up the ball on this one!

Hi Richard,

no russian gunboat; it shows a cigar hull shaped ship, invented by Ross Winans (1796-1877). who was an American inventor, mechanic, and builder of locomotives and railroad machinery.

On this page
http://home.att.net/~karen.crisafulli/CigarBoats.html
after the pop up window about Russian cigar ships actually constructed there is a pop up window about proposals and it gives information about the subject for the Renova model.

Hi looker,

ok, you are right, the boat was a construction for the russian navy; I thought, that the inventor was not russian but american.

Cheers

He was an American trying to make money off the Russians.:)

Ross Winans had already made a lot of money off the Russians, building a railroad system for them in the 1850's. It's what enabled him and his sons to indulge their own hobby of building 1:1 scale, live-steam ship models :)

Incidentally, I have a model of the Winans family's last effort on the subject of cigar-ships available as a 1/250 scale model on my website, www.waldenmodels.com

Check it out!

Cheers,

Oliver
