WAK Type 94 TK tankette

The IJA watched armour developments in Europe in the 1920s and 30s and used a number of European developments in the local designs. The tankette designs of the late 20s were obviously attractive to the Japanese because of the low cost of these vehicles. The Type 94 TK was originally designed as an artillery tractor but was found to be useful in China as a light infantry support tank. WAK claims this model is a Te-Ke but that designation properly applies to the later Type 97. The TK and Te-Ke tankettes were used throughout the Pacific war mostly as light armoured tractors.

The WAK model has 4 pages of 80 gsm frame parts and diagrams. The diagrams are well executed and are as good as any current Polish publisher. The text, in Polish, is limited to 2 pages on the inside of the front of back covers. There are 4 pages of parts on approx. 160-170 gsm.

The model is printed in a four colour camouflage scheme - yellow, pale ochre, dark green and brown. I think this is fairly typical of Japanese AFVs in the 1930s. There is no weathering or shading on the model.

Both band and individual link tracks are supplied - given the small size of the vehicle it would seem to be a challenge to build the individual link tracks. The level of detail in this model is quite astonishing. For example every hatch hinge is modelled as a working hinge, every nut and bolt head on the suspension is modelled.

I think this model is not suitable for a beginner but a modeler with some experience, good eyesight and a steady hand will find this a challenging build.

Regards,

Charlie

Good review, Charlie. I have this one and should get started on it soon.

I am not sure that I will actually apply every nut and bolt.
