Dutch windmill project
Hello everybody,
After designing a series of Dutch buildingsI decided it was time to add a windmill. I've been hesitating for a long time because of the various shapes and bits, but after looking through a windmill book the temptation got the better of me, so tonight I'll make a start by collecting pics etc. There are various types, but I chose the most common, the octogonal model. Why? Well, not only because it is the best known type, but also because it opens the way to a series future models, like with this undercroft: These undercrofts also survive without their windmill in lots of place, including here in Veendam, so both the combination as well as the separate pieces can be issued as models. And then there is the more factory like approach, with usual a Diesel hidden somewhere downstairs for days without enough wind: This one is in Zuidlaren, close to my home. Of all three components there are lots of varieties so I'll have to make some choices. For now only the mill itself is on the agenda. First sketch, two days ago. The form is right, but I think I'll go for a taller and more slender look. Also, the bottom curve is too sharp, will have to be divided. Still, it's a beginning. Second version, done tonight. This one I like better. Also, to spare me from alterations later on, I made it to scale. This part is now 6 scale meters high, in h0. |

Looking good, I like the windows on the original.
Mind you the little paddle wheel canal boat caught my eye. Tim |

I have a secret thing for smock mills. Not only Dutch, but very common on the east coat, proliferate during the early New Amsterdam days of the U.S.
There were several of these still standing on LI not many years ago. Looking forward to your work, The DC

Thanks! That occasional condition name "wurruk" got in the way a bit, but it will be continued soon.
