Went back and tried a third time and it works. Thank you. I'll probably do the church first

Can some one please explain how the turret works?

Tim
The French called it an oscillating turret - the idea was to get rid of the weak points in the turret armour associated with the gun mantlet and balance problems with the turret with the conventional positioning of the gun. The turret is in two parts - the lower part is like a conventional turret with turret ring, etc. The gun recoil assembly is fixed to the upper section and the upper section swivels on the lower around a pair of trunnions on the sides. There's an overlap between the upper and lower sections so when the gun is at low elevation the armour thickness at the front is doubled because the turret sections overlap.

The turret worked pretty well in the AMX-13 tank with a 75mm gun (copied from the Panther gun) but the design hasn't been used in heavier tanks so I guess the weight savings don't scale with larger guns.

Regards,

Charlie

A good idea that was not quite as good as had been hoped.
Although it saved a crew member, by including an automatic loader for the gun, there were problems sealing between the 2 halves for NBC protection and waterproofing.
Also the narrowness in height of the lower half of the turret lessened the effective strength of that bit of the armour.
