Fly Model 72 - CVA-60 Saratoga (1/200)

Nearly two years ago I started building the Saratoga. My model is from the first edition, in the meanwhile a second edition was publlished which can be identified easily due to the different cover. The model was built for the 3rd kartonbau.de competition. Since no building report was allowed during the competition, I wrote a rather short report later. It can be found --> here <--.

Major difference of the first edition is the lack of planes - the second contains one sheet with 8 A-4 Skyhawk, 8 F-4 Phantom and 10 F-8 Crusaders.

WHV offers two sets of carrier aircraft in 1/250 scale - one set for CVA-59 Forrestal containing one Retriever helicopter, F-8 Crusader, F7U-3M Cutlass, FJ-4Fury, F4D-1 Skyray, F11 Tiger, A-3D Skywarrios and F9F Cougar; the other with E-2 Hawkeye, F-14 Tomcat, F/A-18 Hornet, S-3 Viking and SH-60 Sea Hawk. The carrier has now a total of 42 planes (3x E-2, 12x F-14, 11x F/A-18, 12x S-3, 4x SH-60).

Since Saratoga was in service until the eighties, I've chosen the more modern planes. These were scanned and scaled to 1/200.

I can't remember any big problem. My major fault was the random distribution of the life rafts. Have fun with the pictures!

Cheers, Old Rutz

Contrary to the original model, I built also parts of the hangar deck (colored red, perhaps a little bit too brite but this were the parts for the under water hull) and lowered some of the elevators.

Due to the 1/200 scale, the model is ~160cm (63") long

Wow! Great build! All the flat surface on a carrier scares me! Lots of room for error! You did a nice job with that! Thanks for sharing this!
