Alcala Gate, Madrid

This Alcala Gate dates from 1778 and is a replacement for an earlier gate built in 1559. It was designed by the architect Francisco Sabatini and sculptors Robert Michel and Francisco Gutierrez to commemorate King Carlos III and has claims to be the first triumphal arch to be constructed since ancient Roman times. For the most part materials used were grey Segovia granite with Colmenar de Oreja white stone for the sculptures.

The model was published by Arcatura in 1989 and is in 1:100 scale: it measures 37 x 10 x 21 cm. The parts fit is very good and I found it a pleasure to make.

That is quite beautiful.

I hadn't heard of that gate, or the publisher

Same here. It is a quite beautiful piece of architecture/sculpture. You did a great job of modeling it.

Thank you for the enthusiastic responses, folks.

I've also built the Triumphal Arch in Barcelona but have no pictures of it as yet. I'll have to consult with my official photographer (my other half) to see if we can make it possible.

Cheers!

That model is exceptional.

The artwork is also stunning and adds greatly to the effect.
