The Buddha

Three, well two, sculptures representing Gautama Buddha.

The first rather cross-looking one is Canon's original model of the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple, Japan. It's no longer available as it's been replaced by a larger and more detailed offering which comes second in the list. Quite an improvement, I think.

Last but not least is the Buddha from Borobudur Temple, Java. This one's from Paper Replika and of the three it's my favourite.

If anyone knows of other paper Buddhas out there I'd love to be informed.

Interesting. Those remind me of a reclining Buddha model I have seen years ago in one of the Russian magazines. That one was very cool too but haven't seen it since.

I thought you might like that one Philip. A Google Image search on 'Paper Buddha' turned up a lot of images, but not many led to a paper model. Of the few that did, this was by far the best one in my opinion.

Try to make a lineless version without putting in any of the folds. Just let the tabs pull it into a curved shape. Removing the tabs completely and using tapes to butt join the seams will add much to the smooth surface effect too. With a bit of inside burnishing a well rounded surface should be achievable.

I did some rooting around of my own and managed to come up with this one:

Looks a cheerful sort.

I'm not keen on square edges on any figurines. It just ain't natural ...( 'specially on females). I've always preferred the well-rounded smiling figure of Buddha, but on casting around for images I've just learned that the fat, jolly fella ain't Buddha at all, but a Chinese monk called Budai. https://people.howstuffworks.com/tha...snt-buddha.htm

Amazin' what you can learn via a paper model fan site, ennit.

I tough this is common knowledge since Gautama Buddha practiced asceticism. Chinese culture use to (maybe still does in some places) associate "excess weight with wealth and wisdom.

There are many ways to reaching enlightenment, look up Drukpa Kunley for one of more exotic ones.
