Automata, Keith Newstead

Many fans of automata will have heard that Keith Newstead has sadly passed away. Keith was a giant in the field and well known for his generosity, sense of humour, and boundless ingenuity.

Keith’s original “Tipu’s Tiger” is part of the automata collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The museum commissioned a paper automata for their gift shop. The paper version is a gentler interpretation where the hapless lion tamer is licked rather than being mauled!

Keith wrote an article and generously shared the model in the 2019 May/June issue of Automata Magazine. The build was straightforward and it is still in great working order despite some rough handling by young hands.

Sad news indeed, Sharon. I've never attempted any of Keith's designs but after seeing your picture I'm thinking of having to put that right. It's a cracking model, isn't it?

Very sad news. Only 64. A real gentleman.

He was a great inspiration to automata builders - and produced some stunning work. I hope a lot of it will remain available.

Those of you unfamiliar with his work can have a look at his webpage - and marvel at some of the very artistic work there. Always quirky, but very entertaining!
