Stave Church, Norway
Stave churches were once commonly found all over northern Europe, but the only ones to survive until today, about thirty of them, are all situated in Norway. I don't know which one this is (it doesn't say here) but I think it must be the one at Borgund. The flying gargoyle-type figures on the two upper levels represent dragons, I am informed.
The kit was published as "Stavkirke" by Torp Grafisk as, Oslo, 1990. No scale is mentioned. The base measures 23 x 29 cm and it's 37 cm tall. It was a simple design (for the souvenir market I would imagine) but making it was a very enjoyable way to pass the time. Here we go thinking along the same lines again. I was thinking of this one as my next build, Inkjet_Paper_Scissors: LakeTown: The Great House.
I'd say yours is much more realistically done. Nice job

Nice looking model of the building. I like all of those angles on the roof.

Greetings, friends, and thank you for your interest. Godness me! Stave churches are coming at me thick and fast! Found another one yesterday:

And out of the woodwork comes more, er, woodwork…
Hi All, And hi, Philip. Thanks for inspiring the frustrated carpenter in us with your appealing build of your stave church. Well done. And it’s always good to see the complimentary models posted by other members as well. I find myself doubly blessed as I am the lucky owner of a pair of Stavkirker. And interestingly, both vintage models were designed by Hans Christian Madsen and were available in the various Scandinavian Allers publications. The simpler, smaller church was found in Esben Rasmussen’s flickr collection, while the larger, more complex model was built and gifted to me by fellow member Tom Greensfelder. I understand the interiors of the actual stave churches are quite dark and moody because of their lack of large windows. However, I’d still like to see one someday. Philip, thanks again for showing us your fine model and prompting me to retrieve my own to have another look at them. They represent some truly remarkable buildings. Score and fold, Thumb Dog |
