Postcard Models by L'Instant Durable

L'Instant Durable is well known on this forum for the excellent quality of it's complex architectural model kits. Perhaps it's less common knowledge that they also produce, or used to produce, a large range of cutout postcards intended for the tourist trade and sold in gift shops and the like for the benefit of the discerning postcard buyer. I find the concept appealing so decided to try one or two to see what could be done with them.

They vary in complexity. Some are simple boxy shapes while others are quite complex for their size. Building the latter kind is not helped by the properties of the card, which by necessity has to be strong enough to survive the rigours of the postal system. I wonder if some of them were ever meant to be built at all but just admired as little pieces of art. I've done my best with these Parisian landmarks:

- Arc de Triomphe, Tour Eiffel, Le Sacre-Coeur (Montmartre)
- Les Invalides (Tombeau de Napoleon), Le Musee du Louvre, L'Obelisque (Place de la Concorde)
- La Sainte Chapelle, Centre G. Pompidou (Beaubourg), Tour Montparnasse

The intention is to cobble together a few more from time to time, but you know what they say about best-laid plans. And I won't be attempting them all. as I got to 128 before I stopped counting.

Nice. Sacre-Coeur was the first cathedral I was ever escorted out of. The doorway behind the curtain led to the walkways overlooking the main floor. There wasn't any sign saying it was off limits...

Actually, the next one was not a cathedral. The chapel at the castle at Heidelberg. Asking where the WC was, didn't get me out of that...

This was way back when there was an East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. I played it a lot safer in those countries, at least most of the time. In Beograd I met a Soviet soldier, and in spite of having a visa that restricted me to the hotel except when accompanied by a guide, the soldier and I went to a bar and bought the place out. At the time, Yugoslavians could emigrate to a country that they had currency for. A dollar went a long way there. The Russian soldier and I had a great time buying drinks all around. I hope that we bolstered diplomatic relations

Really nice little builds. Are they still in production?

Much thanks for your comments, folks. I've got a handful of new models finished, and will get round to taking pictures one day.

Wyvern: I havn't got a clue if they are still in production or not. The person who might know the answer is Diderick A. den Bakker. He runs an online shop and is a member of this forum. Last time I was at his site he did have some L'Instant Durable postcards on offer. You can contact him here:

Toodle-pip for now.

One can do a Google-search for "Instant d'Urable V&A Museum"...
Many postcards and alikes, sometimes in a buildable resolution.

Enjoy!

And if you dare to look in Pinterest... you'll be flooded! ;-)
