The Fortress of Man
The universe is big and dangerous. Or not. Corporal Steinderd blew the cigarette's smoke in a thin fast line. The smoke moved in strange forms. Alien. As the air was alien around him. From the five thousand men that arrived with him at this hell hole, less than five hundred were still with the force. The others were dead or missing in action. Deserters. Almost all, he would guess. The boys who didn't know how to suffer. Someone wrote that sentence in the bunker's wall in front of him. Corporal Steinderd spit. He looked at his right arm. No hand in it. Just the sensors and devices to fit a energy weapon. And he provided the energy. Why was it that everybody whined about the lost hand? Well, time to go. Another perimeter guard, another day. The few Komorasthi still in the planet doing guerrilla would soon be destroyed and after that he would be very glad to help hunt down the deserters...

Nankin Class Cruiser and Mars Fighter
Commodore Valensky followed the Mars fighter with his eyes while the small ship retro burned his engines to slow down, while guarding the Deep Hunter perimeter. Admiring the fighter was a good excuse to escape his duties for a while. His flagship, the Nankin class cruiser Deep Hunter was in a Geo-stationary orbit over Marrantanar II. The place was right above a 88sect city that refused to surrender. Surrounded already for one hundred and twenty eight days, they still fought with all they had. The orders he had received from high command were ugly.
The fighter disappeared from his viewer and the Commodore sat at his desk. He opened a channel to the bridge. "Mr. Shnold", he said slowly, "fire the main batteries against the city for the next two hours." The listened to the answer and after disconnecting he cursed aloud. Then the pumping of the ship main weapons started. He sat there, counting... |
