Character Development
How about having character development chris? think of names for say leader head of different sections of the forces. Maybe even inter fighting between characters over who is best then you go building your forces up. Not sure how you do this but through a good storyline. do you get a certain about of money to attempt the take over of planets and you use up that money as you lose ships or other resources.

Thought this was more of a separate topic because this wont work as a phase. I think anyway. But the idea of character development is important. I forsee each race as having specific strengths and weakness's (as always) I like the idea of each race having a pool of leaders to choose from that are dedicated to that race. maybe have a separate pool of mercenaries that can be hired for bonuses (and maybe weakness's) in different phases. Leaders and mercenaries can be used to enhance race strength and lessen their weakness.

Once the base game is up and running, you could even think of an expansion pack, I'm thinking of something in the lines of privateer, freelancer or even a simpler version of the X universe... The possibilities for lead characters, support characters and spin-offs are endless!

right chris, had a few thoughts on this last night ok bit of dream and short story writing, I did come second in a big short story compitition in Ireland years ago. That would surprie lots with my terrible spelling I think we should have a group in one race that or like distrusted not liked much by their race but one of the leaders befriends one and uses her talent to develop his strenght, A see this character as a surprise to all the others at the start. then they try to find one for themselves. some may see this as robbing from star wars andthe Jedi' stuff but all games and stories we tell today are really just reworking of Fifth century BC plays by the Athenians. most games and sc fi stories have some Character like this. one that proves to be strong that no one has thought of as been good at all. as for names I think we should have the leaders with names that anyone playing the game may know of like Peter and so on. that is the start of my thinking on this |

So you are pretty much thinking of writing a background story to help players understand what the characters are in each race? The main characters will of course be all pre-defined cards or something. Dunno what yet of course
expansions are a definte must as I hope people will be developing models for the game for a long time to come - maybe even be collectible someday! Chris |

I can say that the idea of learning and getting new abilities is at the core of all greatest games I ever played in.
This game should be playable as one off encounters, so to say "pitched" battles, but the main strength should lay in ability to play long campaigns, where your systems are getting better defences and industry/farming - allowing you to field more and better units, where spaceships are getting addons and refits which influence their speed/maneouvreability, guns range/damage and their crews are getting more effective which influences their battle-worthiness - like in Gothic, where entire units are getting experience and become elite (like in Panzer General), where single troops are getting new skills and weapons - like in Necromunda (boy, I love that game). The idea of your units getting better is a hook that makes you immerse in the game and want to play it again and again and again - so your army gets better and stronger. And you want the players to get hooked, do you? |
