Epson EcoTank Printers
Don't know if anyone has noticed, but Epson is coming out with a range of printers called EcoTank. May be of interest if you need a new printer. Did notice that max paper size is 8.5 x 14. Wish they had A3 size.

Guess that's there answer to C I S. (Continuous ink supply) External ink tanks that you add onto an exsisting regular ink cartridge system.

As a regular user of CIS tanks, I'll be interested in seeing this set up for real. I must make a point of visiting PC World to look one over. I often used to wander around the place whilst waiting on a hospital taxi customer, but it's been a good few years since I last visited. Their exhibition style set up may well have changed. I never bought anything there. Just looked around taking notes ... then searched on-line to buy at 2/3 the price or less.
Are any forum members using this set up yet?

I will seriously consider this printer if affordable to buy and maintain with ink purchases.

It's been out in the other region for 2 years now as the L-xxx series.
They're quite good. But you have to be a heavy user. I remember I went 2 weeks without printing anything and my print heads clogged up. But since the ink is cheap, I was able to run multiple cleaning operations without fear of running out of ink. |

That's the problem I have with my current CIS....I have to print something at least weekly to keep the print heads from clogging up/drying out. So usually I print out the test page which has all colors. If needed I also run the deep cleaning which does use up the ink a lot.
I like the idea of these Epson printers because my current CIS set up requires the ink feed tubes to be mounted along the front of the printer. Unsightly. |

What's even nicer is that the CIS is a legit component of the printer. Hence it's part of the warranty.
Well, my warranty card requires me to buy epson bulk inks. But the epson bulk inks are surprisingly reasonably priced. So I don't mind. If EPSON's not your cup of tea, you may want to check on BROTHER. They also released a CIS printer: Multi-Function Centres - DCP-T300 | Brother |

From what I understand the cost of replacement ink is less than what 4 cartridges cost for my WorkForce 7510. I buy the 127 cartridges and they don't seem to last too long if doing some heavy duty printing.

Yep, I installed a CISS on a Canon printer and found it not printing grey after a while. Found out that you need to print something using the photo print function to keep the offending nozzle from clogging up. I created a simple graphic with multiple color bars and print it at least once a week. No problems now. A CISS works great once you work through any problems you might have.
That Epson system looks good, but I will wait to see if they release a wide format printer like the WF-7610 or WF-7620 with CISS. You can buy a CISS for those printers from various suppliers but you have those ink tubes showing and you need to bypass the lid open switch because the lid needs to remain slightly open once the system is installed.

I've already created a document that prints 4 huuuuge solid rectangles colored Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black. I make sure to print that document on cheap copy paper and inspect the output before I do actual real printing of diagrams on card stock (so as not to waste the card stock).
I'm really glad to be on a CIS printer right now -- using up ink isn't as bad as it used to be. |
