"Affordable" laser cutter
Found this while surfing the net an "affordable" 3d laser cutter. At $2000 it is the lowest cost full featured laser cutter i am aware of. Cuts up to 1/4 in. wood or plastic and it is capable of controlled depth for engraving. Includes software to read most graphic files including DWG files.

Accuracy to the width of a human hair. You could engrave all kinds of details on the skin of a paper model then cut the part out.

The proposed asking price is in the same range as a high end large format colour printer. It looks like small laser cutters will be in the general consumer price range within a couple more years.
