New stuff don't last

Earlier this year I had a USB3 port card added to my desktop computer.
It failed yesterday.

Back to the shop for a replacement.

Sigh.

My many years old Epson C88 printer is still chugging along making pretty prints. My almost new Epson Work force all_in_one is banding, head cleaning does not solve the problem. Oh well, I will scan with the newer all-in-one and print with the old printer.

I work for a major UK electrical retailer, and can say for a lot of stuff now - "they don't make them like they used to".

My Workforce (7520?) is past 4 years and chugging right along.
I use third party inks since day one, good quality daily paper and basic card stock for when I was building. Handles up to 13" x 19". Unfortunately they don’t make it anymore and if you do find a new one the price is ludicrous.
I got it for $175, 2 day Prime shipping from Amazon.

We’ve had the exact opposite experience. My C88 went south after a few months and I junked it.

I live in Manhattan, NYC. People here throw away a mountain of perfectly fine products, not the least of which are computer printers. I have found that the reason is almost exclusively because the cartridge has gone dry, most likely from lack of use.

I am now working on my on my 3rd or 4th HP Photosmart C4480 printer. The cartridges are stupidly easy to refill with replacement ink from Ebay. The color quality is great. I've tried other printers over the years. Epson totally pass on them! Ther cartridges are hard to refill and the print head is in the computer not the cartridge like HP.

Hands down HP is the best by a mile.

Generally most stuff is now better in terms of reliability and what it does. Ok we can all recount sorry tales, but where have all the TV repair firms gone?

The TV repair firms have gone because nowadays it's more affordable to toss out a broken tv and buy a new one than it is to get it fixed.

Cell phones aren't there yet, but they are getting close. ($100 to fix a cracked screen, or buy a new upgraded one for an extra $20 a month.)

Epson and Cannon both now have new printers with refillable ink tanks built into them. They do feed from the rear. I don't know how well they work with heavier cardstock as I have not yet taken cardstock to the store to test them on. The sales people said sure they will give it a try in the store but they can only do the test that is part of the printer, they can't try it on my graphics.

Recently I tried feedingg some 110lb cardstock in my Canon TS5020 printer and it went through and printed on it without trouble, it too feeds from the rear. But I have not done any extensive tests printing onto cardstock with it.
