unread post count

I have been experiencing this problem for a few weeks.
Don't know whether its an indicator of a larger problem,
but if I don't tell you, then you won't know.

I am happy to see the email notifications turned back on,
but I still have a regular routine (multiple times during a day)
where I log on to the site and click on the "Unread Posts link in the upper right area.
Just under where it says "Welcome airdave".

There is always a count there, indicating how many new unread posts since my last visit.

When I click it opens a page listing all unread threads with new posts.
And below that, is usually a list of non-updated threads with posts that still haven't been read.

In the past, the "Unread Posts" amount, was the same as the list Unread Thread Posts.
But lately its been different.
As you can see in the photo below. it indicates 31 unread posts,
and yet in the list, there are only 17.

This is happening every time...the unread post amount will always be higher than the shown unread posts.
Where are these unread posts?

I counted 17 threads that have new posts, and right at the bottom, which is cut off in your picture, are the other threads which haven't been read.

I am seeing a total of 29 threads that haven't been read, which contain 32 unread posts

correct me if I am wrong, but that is how I see your count.

The unread post count never included the lower section before.
It only indicated new posts since last visit.

There was about three pages of unread threads containing unread posts
in the lower section, adding up to a lot more than 31 unread posts anyway!
I always have a ton on unread threads in the lower area,
it has no bearing on the new post count....or didn't in the past.

Here, check this out...
I cleared everything last time I was here...

I just looked to the top of the page and saw "4 Unread Posts" so I clicked on it.

The new posts page opened, but now it says "3 Unread Posts".
hunh? what? where did the fourth go?

But then, if you look at the list, theres only 2 Posts shown!!!!
Where did two of them go?!!

and no Unread Thread/Posts to complicate the count, as you suggested.

PS I just looked up again, and it still says "4 Unread Posts" LOL

Did you do something?
This is the first time in a very long time, that the "unread posts" count
has matched the number of unread posts listed!
Granted, only one post to deal with, but still.

Screengrab proves my point, the lower unread Thread/Posts section
does not contribute to the "unread posts" count.

I have been running errands, most of the late morning, so I didn't do anything.

Maybe part of your cache didn't clear out properly, I have no real idea, unless Jason was doing something I was unaware of.

This has been going on for a long time...weeks, anyway...and I clear cache regularly.

Its not a big deal to me, but its a weird glitch (I think)
and sometimes glitches are signs of bigger problems.
And I would expect the man behind the curtain would like to know everything that is going on in Oz, just in case.

My understanding of the unread post count from the upper right is there are XX number of unread posts. So lets say you have 12 unread posts and you click on that link in the upper right, and there is only 1 thread shown. Well all 12 posts would be in that thread. At least that's what I've noticed whenever I click on the unread post link on the upper right.

Right now I have 16 unread posts....but only 10 unread threads above the line that says "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts." So the 16 posts are broken up in the 10 threads.

I thought that i meant that there are 31 unread posts in 17 threads. Meaning that there there are multiple unread posts in one or more threads. That's how I thought that it worked?

Not usually...only one new post initiates a notification...
any subsequent posts are there, but you aren't notified of those
(either as an actual email notification, or as new posts in a thread)

Its assumed that I have not read subsequent new posts.
So it doesn't need to tell me how many new posts have been added to a single thread.
It only needs to notify me of the first new post since the last time I visited.

Unless, somehow, it has been changed to the format you are suggesting.
But thats not how it worked in the past.
