Locomotives: GS series, FP7, GP7 (HO scale)

I've always had a thing for trains, and I love traveling by rail. I've finally got around to translating that into a design project. One thing that I've found to be missing from the paper modeling stable are nice, mid-level models of famous locomotives. There are a great many (very nice) very simple models, with one piece wheel assemblies (forgive my lack of proper RR terminology) and simple shells. I want to produce models with some 3d detail that are still easy to assemble and attractive to look at. For my first projects, I decided to combine my love of Josh Ritter and late steam locomotives to produce the famous GS-4 locomotive that pulled the Coastal Daylight in the 1940s. But since that is a more complex project than I feel I can handle at the moment, being uninitiated in the ways of locomotives, I chose a couple of simpler locomotives to get my feet wet. The first is the beautiful F7. I got a good start on this (see attached pic) but still felt a little overwhelmed. So I switched to an even simpler engine, the GP7. I am collecting references and plan to get a start tonight.

Interesting new development, Avery. I look forward to seeing these locomotives.

I have been diverted by work and vintage deoupages militaire but after my 15 February Perspectives in Military History lecture, I hope to post a thread with my Bayberry.

Best wishes,

Don

I agree that rail vehicles are under-represented in the card modeling world, at least in the North American market.

I really like your civilian boats, Avery! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with in the world of rails! Good luck!

Very cool Avery. If you ships were any indication of what is to come, these should be some great models.

Thanks guys!

Don, I can't wait to see her!

Here's my progress on the GP7. I'm having a lot of fun, all those 90 degree angles are so easy compared to all the curves on a ship.

Looking forward to your results - by coincidence, I was searching for serious (i.e. well detailed) models of the famous American diesel locomotives, without success. Hoping for colourful liveries?!

The most colorful I can find I know nothing about railroads, so do you have any suggestions?

Thanks Peter!

This project is proving to be a huge amount of fun for me, I'm having a blast looking at all the different versions and modifications and figuring out which details go with which version go with which lines.

For colours I had a look at Google Pictures - Union Pacific, Santa Fe, or perhaps Alaska (we spent a very nice few weeks in Alaska early this summer...). But there are many more! We don't get this sort of variety and bright colours on our European railways.
