almost four years later....follow-up!...

wow, fours years gone by.where does time go?

Everyday I see my green PT Boat kit sitting on the shelf,
and everyday I wonder what this Disruptive paint scheme will look like built up.
I keep hoping someone has built and will share some photos.
But it never happens.

So, the other day, I was between builds of the CL-41 Tutor
and I decied to print out the PT Boat kit and build it myself!

I'm not going to document every step of the build
and I can't say how long it will take to finish,
but I'll try to post some regular reports.

You can get more information on the PT Boat kits and their original design work
in these threads:
A PT Boat from AirDave?

PT Boats...and more PT Boats!!
More PT Boats from AirDave...

...
Elco 80ft Class 103 PT Boat in Disruptive Camouflage paint.

First step...and first mistake!
I printed out the four sheets of internal formers and laminated (spray glue) to heavier card.
The mistake was not pre-assembling the large deck plate parts and then gluing them to card as one large part.
Its recommended that you do that.

...
Anyway, steaming ahead, I assemble the Hull inner framework.
Pretty simple really, everything interlocks.
Just flush the top deck edges, don't worry about the bottoms/keel.

The spacers/stretchers are necessary to keep it all squared up.
It was a challeneg to remember how I positioned everything originally.
The instructions don't explain the exact placement of each block and spacer.
but to be honest, it doesn't matter, as long as they all get installed, glued into place, and everything is aligned and square.

...
Next I assemble the Hull (outer) from about? nine parts, plus a number of joiners and overlapping strips.
I started at the front, and assembled the lower parts, then attached the sides (from the front)
leaving the stern plate to the very end.

Its important to cut out the holes in the bottom of the Hull (for the propellor shafts)
and assemble, and install, the recess boxes for the prop shafts.

...
Once the Hull parts are partnered up and glued into place... I glued the horizontal ribs to the Hull skin...
then assemble and install the deck "supporting" plate. (I didn't photograph this part, sorry)
Center it and glue it to the inner structure.
Then glue the Hull skin to the edges.
Trim off excess, making the skin flush with the top of the deck (supporting) plate.
Then install the actual "deck".

The deck consists of a top and bottom layer...each assembled from two parts...
sandwiching a 2mm layer of laminated card.
The entire deck is 2.5mm thick and the edges will be wrapped with thin strips.

It is centered front and sides...the stern hangs out a bit further.

So, I forgot to take photos of the assembly, but I installed the splash gurad strips on the sides of the hull
and the finishing strips that go under the edges of the deck.

Everything is triple layered and glued into place.

I also hand coloured (black fine point marker) the deck edging, to match the hull stripes.
Everything is supposed to be handpainted, so its okay if stripes don't always line up perfectly.

...
I also assembled (three layers) the deck railings or whatever they are called...
curved them to match the location and edge glued them into place.

...
With the Hull basically completed, I can start adding things...
starting with the engine exhaust and mufflers, fitted to the stern plate.
There are six mufflers in total so it will take some patience to get all these small parts dealt with.

I also assembled the smoke/fog canister for the main deck.

This is a great thread, Dave. The PT boat looks terrific, and the building images are exceptionally useful, even if you don't document every single step.

More! More!

Don

PS: I thought I already had your PT boats, but did not. Now I do.

Still plugging away at this PT Boat...between other work, and when I am bored...

Finally got one bank of Mufflers done.
Not too difficult, just five or six very tiny parts.
And that includes rolling some small tubes and cutting out very small layered parts.
Takes me about an hour to assemble one Muffler with all its parts...but its a tough hour! lol

So, I decided to switch over to the Prop shafts and Propellors (as well as the Rudders).
This time I used wooden dowels (as opposed to wire rods on my last PT Boat build).
I think the Wire was easier to work with.

And I mixed up the prop shaft supports...glued them all in the wrong locations...and then had to cut them off and build again.

I think I'll go back to Mufflers.

Oh, and I built the Day House and affixed it to the Deck.
No surprises there...built according to the Instructions.

Quite a saga, but it looks very good. Everything looks well-aligned and precise, although looking at that striped hull gives me vertigo.

I should have illustrated, with the Deck edging...

I have provided plain white strips to apply.
But in my "artist's rendition" of this boat, I think I coloured the edges gray.

Photos of boats like this vary.
The ELCO PTs weren't the only boats that got this type of paint scheme.
Along with striping and pattern variations, I saw solid colour edges and some painted edges (stripes).

On this build I grabbed a black marker and tried to stretch the stripe patterns onto the deck edges.
Rather sloppily I might add.
You'll notice I did not try to colour the underside edges of the Deck
even though the deck hangs out past the Hull.

My point is, I think this is an optional thing.
In the same way that my disruptive pattern may not be an exact copy of an actual Elco PT Boat design,
I think its okay to do your own thing with the paint scheme.
Just like the boys did, during the war, when tasked to paint their own boats like this.

Just wanted to put that out there.

I think I would get dizzy while trying to build it.

No, its not quite that bad! lol

...
Still plugging away at it.
Between other projects.
Now that the latest Tutor Jet model (Red Knight) is done, I'll have more time to work on the Boat.

More deck structures done, including the Engine House and Funnel vents.

And the forward House/Cockpit...
and Bridge area, various Wall structures, and such.

One Turret in place...just started on the second one.
