1/33 RCAF AC 274 Mustang Mk.IV - P51D

First, hopefully not the last ...Canadian Mustang.

This one, the City of Winnipeg of the 402 Auxiliary Squadron of Manitoba.
I take it Pilots were not assigned specific aircraft because I can't tell you
if any one single Pilot flew this plane.

I do however enjoy some of the great paint schemes that appear on Canadian aircraft, and thats why I started with AC 274.

How about an Ontario unit?

airdave 06-27-2012 08:09 AM

I haven't looked into it yet, but I did see a "Vancouver" Mustang.
I assume there may be other "cities"?
That would make for a great series of models.

But I have also seen some standard RCAF/RAF liveried Mustangs too.

According to Wiki:
Canada had five squadrons equipped with Mustangs during WWII.
RCAF 400, 414 and 430 squadrons flew Mustang Mk Is (1942-1944), and 441 and 442 Squadrons flew Mustang Mk IIIs and IVAs in 1945.

Postwar, a total of 150 Mustang P-51Ds were purchased and served in two regular (416 "Lynx" and 417 "City of Windsor")
and six auxiliary fighter squadrons (402 "City of Winnipeg", 403 "City of Calgary", 420 "City of London",
424 "City of Hamilton", 442 "City of Vancouver" and 443 "City of New Westminster").

The Mustangs were declared obsolete in 1956, but a number of special-duty versions served on into the early 1960s.

I MUST do a "City of London" plane!...and have it ready for the upcoming London IPMS show!!

Hey, no fair! How can I Not buy a model plane with my city's name on it?

Royaloakmin 06-27-2012 01:29 PM

Well, Ontario is pretty well covered. Wonder how they missed TO?

Actually there are two Toronto Squadrons.
Full info attached.

But it looks like only the Winnipeg Squadron put the name on the aircraft.
eg City of Winnipeg

Which is a shame since the planes would look cool if they all
had different names.

Nice job Dave. It is great to see someone doing Canadian subjects.
Have a happy Canada Day!!

Royaloakmin 06-28-2012 12:19 PM

Ditto.

Perhaps someday we will see a goodie like a Bristol Bolingbroke.

Well done. You're speaking my language now (eh?) and this will be my first purchase from you.

If I might venture a recommendation, Canadian P-51 fans still rue the loss of a restored plane in City of Hamilton markings that had nice tiger stripes and the high-vis red wing and stabilizer panels that were used on RCAF Mustangs for a time. Pics about 2/3 of the way down this page:

Thanks...yes, I have already looked at the Hamilton Squadron design.
First I want to do the London aircraft because of the upcoming show.
After that...
