Santa Maria

Hi all,

I was just taking a break from my GT racer, and went to do some surfing.

and I came across this on Paper Model Store

Paper Model Store

Krys' description is definitely the most impressive I have ever read

Quote:
All the parts are cut out by laser. Model include all the parts and accessories-metal barrels, masts, blocks, strings, canvas, paint, brushes, glue 1:72 scale
Anyone feel up to it?

Rick

This is the latest of Shipyard's "super" kits. It literally comes with all materials - you just have to provide the tools. The laser-cutting on these kits extends to more than just the frame pieces. I have their earlier HMS Alert and break it out occasionally and dry fit the frame just because the fit is so good. One of these days I'll work up the nerve to start gluing. the HMS Alert has brass cannon barrels, turned wooden masts and spars, metal fittings, wooden blocks and deadeyes, cloth sails, tube acrylic paints, brushes and a couple tubes of Butapren-A glue. There is a multi-language set of instructions with dozens of assembly sequence photos in B&W and color. I assume the Santa Maria kit is similarly equipped. These kits are, in my humble opinion, worth every penny of the rather hefty price tag.

If I had the hobby money, I would go for this in a second. For some reason I find ship models fascinating and totally intimidating.:o Bu a kit that seems as complete and well designed as this one takes away a lot of fear. Of course, there's still the fear that I'm going to screw it up!

I think if I ever decide to tackle a sailing ship (there's a pun there, isn't there) - this would be the type of kit I'd have to have. Without the metal bits and string and setup for rigging, I'd never get anywhere once I got the hull and masts done otherwise.

Yes, thanks for that link. I just visited a replica in need of repair in Corpus Christi over the summer, this looks really close to the full size one.
