Lou,
Great minds, indeed. I was thinking about doing the Sims class next. Oh, well! Maybe back up and do the Farraguts, or Porters? Also considering cruisers, but need to figure out how to splice keel, hull sides, etc that won't fit in one piece on letter size sheet in 1/600 scale. The stack bases are indeed difficult to model correctly - very finicky. I prefer to start attaching the hull sides at the stern, at the longitudinal bulkhead, so there is no gap or overlap. The hull can be trimmed at the bow if necessary. The parts go together pretty well for me. I could go with fewer transverse bulkheads, and delete the slots, but I like rigid, sturdy, models. A modeler could leave out some bulkheads if they choose. Scale on an 11x17 sheet? I use a 7" x 10" printable area so it will print on both 8 1/2" x 11" US letter size and the ISO A4 - 8" x 12". Allowing 1/2" all round the 11x17 would leave 10"x16". Vertically the max scale would be 600 * 7 / 10 = 420, so 1/420. Horizontally it would be 600 * 10 / 16 = 375, so 1/375. The max scale printed on 11 x 17 would be 1/420. if the parts were re-arranged, we might get something like 1/400. I have a printer that would handle 11x17, but cardstock in that size would be a special order. Wayne |

I uploaded the model of USS Maury, DD401. Camo scheme is Measure 22, with Navy blue hull below the main deck and haze gray above.

Hi,
Just wondering if there is a model of the Buckley DD808 destroyer. My brother served on it during the 1960s. Thanks, Gary |

Gary, I don't have a Gearing class in the works. Lou Coatney might very well have one, though. Wayne |

Gary -
The late and much missed Barry Gilder designed a Gearing Class DD as a post-WWII mod (DDR 806, USS Higbee) that is, as far as I know, available from ECardmodels. I am in the office and can't get to Ecards on a military computer, but the build thread is here Gearing repaint and back in time 1/200 and the link is here http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/387958-post49.html. You might be able to modify it to replicate DD 808. There are also, I believe, some Gearing and/or Sumner class DDS available from Polish publishers. Am currently engaged in jumping through my watchband and unable to conduct a search, but someone may be able to give you a lead. They would, of course, be more of a challenge to modify. Wayne - Apologies for the hi-jack, but I thought I should answer Gary. I hope you will continue with the pre-war and 1942/43 ships and paint schemes. Don |

Actually, Wayne, I have promised a high school friend to do the Sumner class - he was an officer on DeHaven during Vietnam - and it is the same basic hull ... albeit overloaded and with insufficient fuel capacity ... as the Fletchers ... which I have started ... like many others ... but .... The Gearings had lengthened hulls for more stability and fuel tankage.
I've GOT to get BACK to assembling my .jpg/.png Sims test-build, but I've taken time off to finally do a Matapan (Mar41) game, which is free for print-and-play at Matapan: The Naval Battle for Greece, Mar41 |

I just uploaded USS Craven DD 382 in measure 31/9D camouflage.
Next up will be USS Sterett DD 407 in Measure 32/11D as modified in late 1945 in preparation for the invasion of Japan, with increased AA armament and no torpedoes. |

Where does a landlubber go to find out about all this Measure stuff?
