A few weeks ago I took a list a list and still come home without the 2 primary things on it, motor oil and a pair of pants.

This series is being done with the cooperation of the Oregon Historical Society, they are reproducing the plans for me, the stern wheeler "Hassalo" will be next.

Neat about historical society.
Would I be off base in assuming the Hassalo build to be hassle free?


My overall health is a mess this century and I'll probably never get the boats built but I may have to order one of each kit, because.

Hassalo is a name I remembered, is in that book on 10 different pages.

And somewhere in book is a boat named Tahoma, which is also my favorite computer font.

Okay, this one starts out pretty easy, removed all of the parts for the hull's sub-structure.


I started color coding sub-structure components about 30 years ago, it comes in handy from time to time.


In this particular example, the core color is neutral, or 50% grey, anytime you see this grey, you know it's an internal support structure.


The two halves of the "keel" or, "spine" of the sub-structure is joined by a spline.


At this stage, the narrow hull design first becomes prevalent.



The keel is laid first followed by the six, internal support structures, at this stage both ends are weighted until dry to assure that the structure is flat on the work surface.

Looks like a solid hull structure.

The hull was much slenderer than the superstructure. Those sidewheels really fattened the beam.

Right Don, they really had to widen the beam or free-board to accommodate the wheels and wheel housings which also attributes to the narrow hull design.


Apparently this ship went through a MAJOR modification.


The plans as well as one early photo I've seen show a single stack amidship aft of the pilothouse, later photos show it with twin stacks fore the pilothouse, this would indicate that it went from one boiler to two.


The forward, gent's smoking lounge had to be modified on either side to accommodate the new twin stacks.


I'm a, "paper purist" Don, I don't even use poster board so the internal support structures are designed to have maximum rigidity when folded and are really quite rigid when in place, all of it in 67 lb stock.


Note the number of glue tabs on the first 12 parts, just a glimpse of the glue tabs to come, because of it's, "fluid" design this thing has a tremendous number of glue tabs..

I haven't had the opportunity to look at the files you sent. but this looks like you spent a lot of time on the assembly of the model.

Jim, I've only assembled a B/W prototype so far, this will be the first time I get to see it assembled in color, with any luck at all, the colors should be right where I left them.


Working out insignificant little bugs as I go along.
