Gipsy Moth from GPM

GPM is announcing Gipsy Moth in two versions, both 1/33 scale, designed by Tomasz Kopecki:

The version on the cover is G-AAMT, as flown by Denys Finch (portrayed by Robert Redford in the Sydney Pollack film "Out of Africa").

Here's what it looks like in reality:

G-AAMY was repainted for the film:

The other version is Amy Johnson's famous G-AAAH "Jason":

There are some fantastic color photos of Gipsy Moth G-AAHI painted in likeness of Amy Johnson's G-AAAH (larger photo at source):

The preview photos at the GPM site are so small so that it is difficult to judge the quality of the paintwork. But the subject is great. Finally someone dares bring out a classic civilian aircraft! Is this a break of the military trend?

Leif

Hmm, another possible Leif Ohlsson rework perhaps? In 1/16th scale?

Gypsy Morth

Hi Leif,

The Gypsy Moth is a beautiful biplane with it's straight wings and raised Cirrus engine, the little sister of the Tiger Moth. I'm glad that GPM released this model - I will probably order it, as I'm a sucker for biplanes.

I love the flying scenes in Kenya in "Out of Africa". A great movie - I have seen it many times, and I also read the book. I kind of missed the whirring of that plane when I visited the farm (in 'Karen') just outside Nairobi two years ago.

Thanks for the fine photo links - they are all promptly downloaded.

Best,
Bengt

1:16 Build a Must

Thanks Leif,

Pretty little bird - hopefully GPM will have enough turnover on the Gypsy Moth to enable further "civilian" entries into their catalogue.

Are you considering a 1:16 build or is it too early to tell?...,

Best, +Gil

Hello Bengt & Gil. This little start of a thread is soon two years old. I guess you ended up here after following a link from August's rescaled & repainted build of the Lad'n Dad Avro Avian, where August posted a query for a model including a Cirrus engine.

Since I had the GPM Gipsy Moth kit lying around, I took a look, and it does indeed model the Cirrus engine pretty detailed:

Another glimpse of the instructions show a pretty detailed model overall:

Hope this quick look into the kit is helpful if you're considering it!

- Leif

Earlier than this thread I had helped Bernie ('Cardist') out with a few drawings & photos of the Cirrus III engine for his very, very nice PWS 50 build.

Since this thread now has been unearthed again, it is appropriate to reproduce some of that material here (in addition to the link given; do check it out, there are a lot of photos of the Cirrus III engine there). Here is the outcome of that work, a sort of photographic four-view of the Cirrus III engine:

This is just an image of the drawing. If you seriously intend to build a Cirrus III engine, please download a pdf of the Cirrus engine four-view from the downloads section (as soon as it clears the moderation queue).

Cool find Leif, this would definately interest me, a nice model of the Moth is very tempting, to repaint, too....and it did generally have a wooden prop? Much different in shape than yours?

Glen, if you ever lay your hands on the kit you may find it would be a good thing to repaint it, even if you only wish to build the Amy Johnson "Jason" variant, which is one half of the kit.

What holds me back is that it is a printed kit. As such the only thing you pretty much can do about it is to build it as it comes. Repainting (and rescaling) would mean scanning the kit (not a problem per se), and more or less redrawing it (not a problem in principle, but you've really got to love the subject to undertake that amount of work).

That's why it's been on my shelf instead of the building table.

- L.
