Chris,
40,000 Po-2 built, and the most built biplane in the world. What is the most built aircraft all categories in the world, one wonders. Anybody know? Peter, on Chris' and your recommendation I ordered my own Po-2 today, from Slawomir Wojcik at Kartonmodellbau.net (the most reliable and friendly provider on the European scene). Looking forward to it very much! Last edited by Leif Ohlsson; 03-06-2009 at 10:01 AM. |

Now that's a great list! Interesting that there were more B-24s produced than B-17s, yet the Fortress got most of the press. Perhaps Boeing had a better PR department. There are going to be some people upset here because the Corsair isn't on the list. We need more cowbell and Corsair!!!

Thanks Rick! The Po-2 is right up there at the top, as I suspected. Just couldn't make up my mind which small civilian aircraft would have been produced in greater number. The Cessna 172 makes total sense, of course.
Ron, you do remember the Ford production lines of the B-24, right? Sections made all over your country, and assembled in a number of places. For beautiful photos, see these albums in the gallery: http://www.papermodelers.com/gallery...ry.php?cat=531 http://www.papermodelers.com/gallery...ry.php?cat=530 Although they depict the transport version C-87, these colour slides certainly are something extra! Yes Leif, that method of production applied to many of the U.S. combat aircraft in WW2 with various manufacturers assembling the 1:1 scale "kits." If I remember correctly there were actually instances of a competitor being assigned to assemble another builder's aircraft. I think this applied to either Boeing or Consolidated having to build the other's bomber. I used to have all those block designators and sub-contractors memorized - too many years have gone by and too much brain dust.

Chris (Coyle), are you going to keep this thread for the construction report? Or open a new one? Just to keep an eye on your bird. Last edited by milenio3; 03-06-2009 at 11:43 AM. |

Po-2 reference drawing for download
For my own sake I compiled and edited the Airwar.ru drawings refered to in previous posts. I collected all the relevant drawings of the ordinary (no five-seater, no floats) Po-2 into one, and added various relevant detail sketches. If you are planning to build this model the drawing might come in handy at some point, so I uploaded it to the downloads aviation section.
The scanned drawings from Airwar.ru are all a bit crooked one way or another, so I made an attempt to get them at least squared up, but there are no guarantees that I made a good enough job of it. All detail sketches were reduced to the same scale, 1/16. The download text, as well as the drawing itself, contain directions for how to rescale or view the drawing in 1/33. Details are compiled from different versions of the Po-2. The more detailed cockpit views are from the floatplane drawings, which might explain subtle differences. The drawing is big, but you can always copy the parts you want and make your own set of reference drawings for building the Kartonowa Kolekcja model. Leif I attach an illustration of what the compiled drawing looks like. It's only a quarter of the full size, so don't use this; download the full version. |
