Quote:
Those are Le Prieur Rockets Don. The French employed the first air-to-air combat rockets in April 1916. Four Le Prieur rockets were attached to each strut of Nieuport fighters. The rockets were used effectively against German balloons until incendiary bullets were developed. The Sopwith Pup included Le Prieur rockets carried on the interplane struts, they were electrically fired at the balloons. Terribly inaccurate, they forced pilots to fly within 125 yds. of their target. This range barely allowed the pilot to fire and to pull up to avoid collision with the balloon. The last picture is a test firing of the rocket. |

Thanks, I had been thinking about it, I don't think Little ever had them on his aircraft though. I am installing the control cables now and will post pictures tomorrow or Friday.

Superb job on the rigging, Douglas!
Thanks for the additional info and images of the Le Prieur rockets. I think the first time I ever saw this kind of armament on a WWI aircraft was in a Douglas Rolfe pen and ink sketch from Air Progress or some similar magazine in the early 1950s. I think this is the first time I have seen detailed images -- and certainly the first time I ever saw a photo of one of those rockets being fired. Don |
