Thanks for the nice comments.
I built the cowling in the normal manner. The paper was sprayed with artists fixative prior to painting. The engine was protected by inserting a normal paper disk (cut slightly over size) inside the front of the cowling. Then I painted it with a rattle can of flat gray. Two coats of gray filled the seams very nicely. This will be followed with a coat of medium gloss steel. |

Hi Douglas,
Nice beginning on your Pup, that cowling is most excellent as the others have observed. I found a Sopwith Baby Floatplane in 1/48 scale designed by Roman Vasilyev that has no less than 5 variations in one kit that I am itching to get started on to add to my Sopwith collection. Looking forward to your updates.

Canadian Air Vice Marshal Raymond Collishaw CB, DSO & Bar, OBE, DSC, DFC was part of or commanded many of the RNAS but I don't believe he flew with No. 8. During this period, late 1916, he qualified as a pilot joined 3rd Wing in Ochey, France, flying Sopwith 1˝ Strutters.
His first victory came on October 12th, 1916. He is unofficially credited with 81 kills. This would have put him ahead of the "Red Baron" and top British Empire ace Billy Bishop. The reason for the descrepancy is that he had a habit of giving credit to junior pilots for his kills as a confidence builder. Many who served with him recalled being taken out by him to "bag one". As it is he is rated as second only to Billy Bishop within the British Empire. Two Canadian boys do good. Last edited by B-Manic; 05-02-2009 at 04:59 PM. Reason: ~more cowbell~ |
