A metal model build-a-thon

Hi all,

Over the past 2 weeks, I have been on a metal model kick, it really started when I was looking at my WIP Optimus Prime, standing on the shelf, sans head and arms, having stood so for some 2.5 to 3 years.

After acquiring a stepped mandrel, and set of 5 graduated thickness bending sticks as the listing on Ebay described them, I set forth to finish the arms and head.

After Optimus was finished, I wanted to continue building some more metal models, so going through my stash, and letting some of my friends pick a model they wanted to see me build, as of Saturday evening, I ended up with 10 different models, a windmill, a M4 Sherman tank, a pump jack, a Freightliner COE, Optimus Prime of course, a Klingon Vor'cha class cruiser, a AT-M6 Heavy Assault Walker, Iron Man's helmet, and figures of Iron Man and War Machine.

According to those who have built Iron Man, it is one of their more challenging models, I was only challenged by the helmet, as the connection sequence wasn't all that clear, ended up spending a bit more time trying to get all tabs into their corresponding slots.

I have attached a group shot of the completed models, I can additional photos of the models if anyone wants to see a detail up close.

Rick

They all look great, Rick. It’s been fun following on FB.
Impossible to pick a favorite, but the Klingon Vorcha (?) calls to me.

Wow, they look great. I'd love to see some close ups, especially the truck.

I had a go at building one of these a couple of years ago but rushed into it with a cheap chinese model I purchased on Wish, with an inadequate set of tools and made quite a mess of it. Seeing your results here has made me consider trying again some day, thanks for sharing.

I will move the photos from my phone to my laptop, and try to make a somewhat coherent series of shots of the models

Lookin' good. A good set of tools, lights, and eyes is a must when putting those Metal Earth models together.

Doug,

I have been using my LED light that I bought at Harbor Freight for the extra light on the subject.
I have been using tweezers in addition to the nipper, and pliers, these tweezers are anti static coated, in black, which help cut down on the glare, and I use the ESD-13 and -14, the -13 is a broad surface tweezer, and the -14 has a wide body, and narrow tips, i get pretty good control with the -14 over the other thin/slim tipped tweezers.

I have even used the handle of my Fiskars craft knife to help "curl" some of the treads for the wheels.

Incidentally, in today's mail delivery, I received 15 kits, some completely new to me, like the Marina Bay Sands hotel, and the Kubelwagen, and others familiar to me, colored versions of the Burj al Arab and Burj Kalifa, and painted version of the Enterprise D and Vor'cha cruiser, and Bird of Prey.

Hi Rick,
could you please PM me the link to the site from where you got these models? I have a small collection my self, mostly from Starwars models and a couple monuments (Eifel and bridge of London) , but I am interested in adding some models to it.

Thank you and best regards,
Vassilis
