Saturn V Massive Build

It's 3am Alaska time and just finished a new Air Pressure Rocket.

4-sheets of 24" x 36" 125lb Tag = 6ft Tall Saturn V.

Will launch tomorrow, plan to use the new snow we got today to cushion the landing.

18-hours of solid building. I'm exhausted....

Yes, that is the Estes version I've had for 20+ years. The other is the 27" tall stomp rocket version.

The hardest part was the internal PSI Tube.

Excellent work!
Two questions....
Was this a model you downloaded and if so would you share the source?
What motor are you going to fly that monster on?

Best of luck on the maiden flight, and bring back some pictures for us.

"The hardest part was the internal PSI Tube."

yes, that was exactly my question, how are you going to keep that rocket from exploding? do you have any pictures of the pressure tube?

Yogi-18-hours was just yesterday's time. Redrew some parts Friday night after work, printed and cut till 430am Sat.

Back at it by noon on Sat., couple breaks here and there, glue last part at 3am today.

Peter-Yep, happens when you go from 2000 sq ft to new apart with 480 sq ft-where to put all of my model making stuff?!

Layne-Original design. Direct print-no PDF. Problem with models this big, have to have a huge wideformat printer. No where to get it printed otherwise. Nobody will print on cardstock this big.

No engine-air pressure launch only. Will start with 50# PSI and work up to 110# PSI.

Saturn V Massive Build-saturn-v-70-psi.jpg

Jon-no photos, but, here is the bottom end and top. Looking at the side view-picture a cardstock disc the same size as the bottom one-location is between the words "United States" to keep the PSI tube centered and from warping.

It was made by "extruding" the cardstock. Meaning I forced the cardstock once cut to the proper width through the inside of an 1" PVC pipe, letting it stay that way for hours as I built the rest of the model. This pre-formed it and then once removed it was glued using a 6ft long 3/4" aluminum pipe as a brace.

Bulkheads (cardstock laminated discs) were glued to the outside at the bottom, middle and top. You can see the Top and Bottom discs.

Now that it is done (glue dry) the next step will be to weigh it.

The big issue now that it is completed?
It is binding on the Launch PVC pipe. This was kind of expected.
Answer 1 = To spray silicone spray on the 3/4" PVC pipe to make it slippery.
Answer 2 = Use 1/2" PVC pipe and make "shims" to seal it at the bottom.
Answer 3 = ?
Answer 4 = Static display
Air Pressure will be trapped inside nosecone for a shock absorber-notice that nosecone is extended in the following photo.

Today's expected flight should have a soft landing!

Saturn V Madien Flight

Well, the air pressure blew the launch tubing apart, but the rocket did lift off sort of.

It weighs 10.7oz ready to fly. Need to do some improvements to the launch system.

Here is a photo of it on the launch pad.

Freezing rain isn't helping matters. It did have a very soft landing. However the wet snow stuck to the rocket and that means no more flights today.

Air pressure? A six foot tall "stomp" rocket, I am impressed.

But it would look dang good rising into the sky on a pillar of flame.

As an aside, have you ever considered printing on regular paper (wide format) and gluing it to poster board? That is how I built my 300% upscale of the Currell Freide. At the time I had access to a 36" plotter so I just printed it out to scale, cut the sheets to size and used rubber cement to back it with poster board.

And finally, will you ever consider releasing your Saturn as a kit?

Hi Layne,

A smaller version is at ecardmodels.com, AirDave repainted it to look more realistic and has it listed as part of the stomp rocket packs.

My graphics aren't anywhere near as good as what Dave does.

Yours is way more detailed than mine! It looks great on the flames!!!! Awesome!!!!

In the past I've built 2-of the Estes versions, you can see the only one I have left in one of the previous photos. A LHS salesman sold my ex the wrong engines and it stuck into the muddy ground before the ejection charge, rebuilt it and on the 6th flight it cato'd the engine warping the fuselage shell and destroying the internal ejection charge tube. Someday I plan to fix it, but at over $25 for 3-engines here in Alaska, stomps rockets are more in my price range.

I do print stuff for certain customers (wideformat) charging $10 per sheet. Recently did a print job for a client that was 10-pages of maps.

If you would like one printed at this scale, it is 4-pages and shipping would be extra. I have a photo quality printer now that uses some very expensive ink (6-cartridges at $40 each).

Really like your photo! The dirt flying really adds to launch, bet it sounds great too!

BTW-this version uses air from a PVC launch system, not a stomp rocket. Can be pumped-up with a bicycle tire pump or in my case using an air tank.

Check out Closest Astronauts "Goin Stomping" thread for details on where to find the launch system plans. He just upgraded the system to be more user friendly. Goin Stompin

Oh, no, no no...
That isn't my Saturn...
Wish I could lay claim to it, she is a beauty. Pictures of the Friede paper build are below. Unfortunately she had to be retired after loosing a fin on her second flight. Dang paper tabs.....

Next time the fins will be more securely attached.
