1:12 Mercury Redstone Air Launch Rocket

Well been home from work this week with not much to do.

Designed a whole new rocket from the lazy boy I've been confined to.

This is an alpha build and print, parts fit fine, just need to redo some of the color / graphics.

The main part of the capsule has 2,458 pices of line detail. The louvers, rivets/washers etc..Autocad does an "item" count..This count does not include the upper capsule pieces just the main capsule.

The replaceable nosecone section has a dual purpose, it is designed to handle the landing shock by providing 6" of travel forcing the air trapped inside to leave upon hitting the ground. Don't know if it will work, but plan to give it a try soon!

Rocket is 5.75 ft long, here are a couple of photos next to the Saturn V that has been repaired a few times.

The Redstone uses the Metal Conduit launch pipe instead of the warped PVC that the Saturn is designed for. Couldn't make my mind up to cut the old PSI Tube out of the Saturn, this caused me to think about doing a quick design of the Redstone and fit it with the newer launch pipe (barrell system).

This build is the result.

My plan is to offer all of these "Massive" rockets for sale once they work properly!

They won't be cheap as my cost to print is fairly large at approx. $5-$6 a sheet depending on how much ink is used!

Both models use 5-sheets of cardstock, the Redstone will end up using 6-when I print a sheet of replaceable nosecones for future use by hopefully interested buyers.

The Redstone ready to fly weight is 10.8 oz.

"Tomy Timer"

Spent last night doing some web browsing.

On some of the "Science Guy" type sites visited, ran across some very interesting ideas.

One site is called just that "Scienceguy". He does mostly water rockets but, he has some very interesting thoughts on air rockets as well. Tried to do a link to the air rocket page on the "link" page here at PM.

What I found most interesting is how they use a "Tomy Timer" to deploy parachutes on water rockets.

Tomy being the name of a wind up toy manufacturer.

They take the small plastic wind up "Clock" and use it to time a parachute release.

This could be transfered over for use on these bigger air rockets possibly.

Plan on visiting the local big box store toy aisle to see if I can find one the proper size. If not there is a web site that has the small plastic "clocks" for sale at $6.50 each.

Whole new approach possible if the shock absorber doesn't work on this 1:12 Redstone. Plenty of room for a parachute!!

Water Rockets
Texas Timers scroll down the left side to find the plastic clock page.

1:12 Scale Mercury Air Pressure Rocket Flight!

It flies!

Check this video link

Will need to work on a recovery system. Good thing nosecone is replaceable...

BTW-Saturn V failed to launch in one piece at 100 lbs launch psi. (it exploded = 20+ pieces). Will need new Saturn V for more testing.

Here are some photos I forgot to post earlier.

Notice that the nosecone has been extended to absorb the shock on landing, however, it stayed in place and as seen in the video, the capsule was flattened.

Thank you for your interest!

As soon as I find a link (lost it some how), this rocket kit will be listed for sale.

Link I'm looking for shows the fin rivet pattern. The rocket graphics have been done to allow buyers to choose either the Freedom 7 or Liberty Bell 7. Lots of rivets to show a more scale like graphics.

Not much different between the two, changes to the capsule windows and a few other markings MR7 vs., MR8.

Once I find the right color cardstock, Friendship 7 atop the Atlas will be done. Looking for some bright and shiny cardstock for the Atlas, tested some metallic white and silver, not quite the look I'm going for, so the search continues. Cardstock sheet needs to be very big as well, preferably 2ft x 3ft size. Found some silver this size, plan on testing some really soon.

Awesome launch, Mike! Wow, that thing really flies!
I have the info I need to press on with a new launch tube design for the Saturn.

I went online to check for spring wind-up mechanisms, and the only options appear to be purchasing a toy or a vintage mechanism, the latter option being quite expensive.

I guess the idea is to have a spring-loaded parachute section with the wind-up activating a release.
