It was just after the start of the war in the East that every Russian aircraft was pressed into some sort of service. Even damaged planes were cannibalized to help the effort. This model accurately represents a typical "recycled" SU-2, where whole sections of different hopelessly damaged aircraft were joined together to create a single serviceable airframe. The prototype of this particular model saw service in Byelorussia and was flown by Alexei Yanchenko as a spotter for the artillery until it was shot down, breaking in half on landing at exactly the joint of the two sections. Yanchenko survived to fly two other recycled SU-2s during the war.
This particular craft was recyled yet again and became parts of five other planes, including one rebuilt Yak-3 and a pair of IL-2 Sturmoviks.

He said with a straight face.

I love this kind of thing! As you well know.

Check out the photo of the two-toned A6M Zero in this J-Aircraft thread: Two-tone Reisen: One More Time! *PICS*

And remember all the great discussion about the colors of CPO Koga's Zero during Glen (Birder's) Hal Zero build?

Anyway, your story sounds entirely plausible to me.

A fine build.

From what I've read, the Soviets in the 1942 period, when they were on the run, slapped whatever paint they could find on airframes, so you could put the color mismatch down to that. I think it makes the model more realistic, not less. Soviet military aircraft lived hard and rough!

I've read that several batchs of LaGG-3 fighters were painted with leftover paint from the farm tractor production line that had been built prior to the urgent need for aircraft!

Thanks for the color link! However, I checked it against another color list and there seems to be some real variation.
