MM Aviation Contest SU-2

For this one I'll be attempting the SU-2, MM from 3/'85. It's a relatively obscure plane and as far as I can find out, it never really entered combat, being out of date by the start of WWII. I could be wrong on that one and I welcome any and all info on this plane and its history.
It's eight pages and it should be challenging to pull off the MG turret at the canopy rear.
Wish me luck!
Chris

Lifted from the RAM

Light monoplane bomber. It was developed through series of prototypes from the ANT-51 when P.O.Sukhoj became a head of independent team. Design and trials were carried out under heavy secrecy restrictions. Designed as a first strike aircraft, Su-2 was unknown not only to Luftwaffe, but also to Red Army pilots. Moreover, it carried no stars on upper wing surfaces. Not a wonder, that sometimes it was hunted by both German and Soviet fighter. First aircraft scored by famous ace A.Pokryshkin was Su-2 piloted by young pilot I.Pstygo.
Obviously a transitional aircraft, it saw intense combat in the Great Patriotic War until front line attack regiments were re-equipped with superior Il-2. Despite performance was very good (for single-engine bomber), Su-2 suffered heavy losses - mostly because was forced to operate without escort fighters during messy 1941. Indeed, there were only two Soviet bombers (attackers) capable to survive under those conditions - fast agile Pe-2 and well armored Il-2. And of course it shared common limitations of this type of aircraft built by other nations as a lack of maneuverability, weak defense and disappointing overall performance. Aircraft was built in several defence weapon arrangements: One or twin machine gun(s) in conventional turret (see photos);
Retractable turret, otherwise flash with fuselage (early models);
Retractable housing in the belly;
Engine power was increased radically, but it penalized overall flying performance (except of course the speed). Final production aircraft carried only 2 machine guns in wings (instead of four original) and only 400kg of a bombload... Over 2,000 Su-2 built, retired in 1942.

Thanks for the info, Shrike. Sounds like I picked a real loser! Well, hopefully it will be a better model than it was a warplane. It's a pretty crude looking old kit, so hopefully at least the fit will be decent?!?

I've always liked the look of this airplane. Glad you are building it, Chris.

Good luck with this build. This aircraft sounds like a russian version of the Boulton-Paul Defiant.

From the few pictures I came across doing the quick research, the standard MM build will look like an over-restored museum restoration. They were not an especially refined design.

I've some preference for not so well know planes. I like the SU-2. I'm going to follow your build with attention.

I would have begun this one already, but I'm having nightmares with the scans. My original copy is really browned with age and the original printing isn't very consistent, so I've only gotten two of the four colored pages to match. The blue underside looks good, but the top color ranges from dark olive-green to yucky brown. The printed color is so inconsistent that I can't seem to make it work! I may wind up painting this model after assembly rather than trying to make the computer fix it.
I've cut out most of the formers already, so maybe I'll just go ahead with the bad colors I've got and worry about them later.
I am getting more interested in this plane as I look at the kit. It's a larger plane than I first thought.

OK, this one has started off badly and gone downhill at every turn. I tried and tried to get the colors adjusted and balanced and I just made everything worse and worse. I was going to give up on even starting it and simply retract my foolish entry, but then I thought...."Is this truly the way of the steadfast and commited paper modeler?" YES!! I mean NO! I'm going ahead with this abomination regardless! If I got through that !*#&!%#*^@ Lenin Car from the last MM contest, I can get through this one. Understand this, though. The colors are horrible and don't match. They never will; there's just not enough information on the spotty, broken original color to scan well enough. At least on my copy and with my limited abilities (and patience) with recoloring.

This is a good illustration of the battle I've been fighting. I couldn't even get the color blue consistent from one end of the same piece to the other end!

The cockpit is actually fairly detailed for a MM kit of this period. The dials were all uncolored, so I at least got those to look a little better.

Now, the reason that I got started on this one is because I've run into "issues" with the ORP Dzik and FT17 that I'm doing as well. I thought, "Hey, the sub and the tank are new territory for me so I'll retreat to something I know, my happy haunt; WWII era planes. I've gotten used to MM build techniques; this is an older kit and should be simple enough. I know I can't read Polish, but the diagrams will get me through"... there are no diagrams for the bombers cabin. none.

I've put together what pieces I sorted out, but I have a bunch that I can't find a home for yet. I'm hoping that as I build the rest of the model I'll find what goes where.
MM Aviation Contest SU-2-img_2589.jpg
So here's the thing that's been driving me crazy. The tail end of the fuselage is a completely different color from the rest.
I don't know what I'll do about it (if anything). At this point, this model is a likely candidate for the circular file so I'm not letting it bother me. I may try to airbrush some winter white over the joint to disguise it, or I may just use it as a firestarter in the fireplace!
MM Aviation Contest SU-2-img_2593.jpg
The main fuselage is done and I have to say that, overall, the fit is typical of MM kits of the day. Not great, but workable. Bulkheads are irregular, some fit, some don't. Skins don't match very well.
It's still an interesting plane and I will finish it... regardless. My apologies for failing so badly at the recolor. I wish this plane had sported some wild camo scheme that I could use to paint over my boo-boos, but there aren't a lot of schemes for the SU-2 that I could find, although this one might be of some help;

Now that I've frustrated myself thoroughly on this one, it's time to return to my confusion on the ORP Dzik and the FT17! Will I get any of them right?????
Chris
PS. Just to top things off, I managed to drop the thing square on its nose, crumpling an almost acceptable cowling....:o
