Had a good evening working on this one and made some real progress.
MM Aviation Contest- J7W1 SHINDEN-img_2632.jpg
The first thing I did was cut out most of the parts. I found that the linework was really washed out on the olive color, so I went over it all with a fine pen. It's hard to see in this shot because of the flash, but it made quite a difference.

But as with most of these earlier MM kits, they tend to look a bit plain, so I added some weathering with a marker; just something to break up the even color.

The fuselage went together fairly easily and the front sections fit fine. However, it wouldn't be a Wasiak design if they all fit perfectly and there's a couple of walloping great misfits on a couple of the sections. With lots of trimming, sanding and fiddling, they're not too noticeable.

The wings have a sort of box former for them, which once I figured out how they worked, I actually quite liked and preferred to the standard wing formers.

The wings went on without incident. I added a couple of the intakes, which needed a little wrangling to get them in place.

For a Wasiak kit, the fit is OK and up to par with most other kits of its day. The canopy is just sitting in place as I hope to cut the cockpit section open and add some mock-up of an interior.

It's even coming out pretty straight! I'm glad I decided to do a clear canopy as it makes a huge difference (I think).

Hopefully more tomorrow!

Chris, your wrangling shows! The build looks great.
Following this from the start, I had the impression the build and how it looked would be so-so at best.
This is coming out fine!

I agree that the clear canopy adds a lot - to any aircraft - cockpit not withstanding.

Despite the age this kit builds into a very nice model.
Great job - quick too :D

I completely agree, Michael. This is definitely one of Bohdan Wasiak's better designs, despite its simplicity and it looks much better in person.
Forging onward;

I did the cockpit interior this morning. Started by cutting down the center of the skin and then folding it to the sides to have something to glue to. Then I took the unused "paper glass" piece from the kit and folded it to form the floor and walls of the cockpit.

Then I just dummied up the rest. It's not even remotely accurate, but at least it looks better than nothing.

The landing gear are bare of any detail, so I'm doing what I can to busy them up a little. I'm also adding the small rudder wheels that aren't covered in the kit.
Having a good time with this one!
Chris

Cockpit looks pretty good - you even went as far as adding the seatbelts

Loving that weathering that you did, it makes the bird really come alive. What marker did you use to make it so washed out? Water color pens?

That is very nice work though, I can't find one problem with the fit you're describing, and I am sorely tempted to try this one. :p

Romanator, I like to use Tombo water-base felt pens with the brush tip, but they are harder and harder to find in my area, so I wind up using Faber-Castell artist pens.
You should definitely try this one. It's by far the best Bohdan Wasiak design I've come across and as long as you pre-fit everything, you should be able to avoid any real problems. It really has been fun to build and it's just a cool looking plane. I'm adding fuel tanks and bombs this morning to finish it up. The prototype was never fitted with them, but they were planned for and will add a little detail to the model, so on they go! Should have finished photos later today.

FINISHED! Really enjoyed this one! The photos don't really capture it, but this kit has a great feel to it and as simple as it may be, the design of the prototype is so striking that IMHO the finished model looks really good for the amount of effort.
