FGMM P-39 Air-A-Cutie
FG's P-39 is an excellent model, a good subject for enhancing. My modifications include: some recoloring (mainly the nose art and stars and bars), wing spar, new landing gear, flaps, landing gear wells, new props, new exhaust ports, radiator exhaust slots, complete cockpit interior, clear molded canopy, and fixes to the design (the soda straw design) . After listing all that, it does seem like a lot of mods. I've wanted a P-39 for some time and I'm glad FG came out with one. I'm building my model at 1/72 scale.
I haven't faithfully documented all the building (sorry), but I have a few details to show. I like building with an internal wing spar to impart great strength to the wing, provide perfect symmetry with the proper dihedral. You can see the wheel well detail inside the wing as well. The fuselage build is pretty straightforward, although I use butt joints with internal splices to eliminate the paper overlap ridges. This shows quite a bit of the interior installed, mostly the scratch build seat. The seat belts are masking tape with paper buckles. The wing fillets were made with regular paper. The instrument panel before installation is shown here: The fuselage has all the lengthwise joints at the bottom, and it is quite noticeable and detracts from the model appearance. Since there is a clean demarcation line between the olive and gray camo, I decided to try to cover these joints with a paper part made by merging the original design in a graphics program. You can see what I mean here. Some of the joints are covered, and another piece ready for instillation. I really like this technique and plan on using it from now on when it makes sense. That's it for now and it may be a few days till I can get back to this as I'll be TDY for a few days.

Mucho nice work John. I love what your doing to improve it. Wish it would show up in my P-39 folder over at FG. Being very well done, the finished plane will most certainly be "A Cutie"

The looks wonderful John! Did you scratch the interior formers and panels? They look very well done. Well, what else would you expect from the good Dr. Laser? :D

Looks great John, your mods show a lot of forethought about the construction process.

Your P-39 looks beautiful! (even from the the non-nose art side) You're mods are really bringing this bird to life. I can't wait to see more.

Excellent, John. I am putting the whole build (along with rps Don's SBD) into my Paper Modeler's Vade Mecum for future reference.
I have always liked the P-39, ever since I had a photo of an early silver model hanging on my bedroom wall as a kid in the 1940s. And I always like to see how you work your magic on the models. Don |
