McLaren MP4/8 Ford, 1993 Japanese Grand Prix (M.A.S.S.)

Hi, everyone!!

A few months ago, I acquired the the 1/24 McLaren MP4/8 by M.A.S.S. Models, something I've been wanting to own for quite some time. I had a chat with the team discussing the shipping and payment, and I decided to go for it.

The kit is wonderfully designed, the print is a very high quality laser print on smooth, white paper. You have three options, the "default" model being Ayrton Senna's race winning car from Donington Park, where he infamously passed several cars for the lead on Lap 1 in the wet. The other two variants are Michael Andretti's Hungarian GP and Mika Hakkinen's Australian GP cars. You can also additionally purchase laser cut wet tyres, they are beautifully engraved, even the smallest of details have been carefully preserved!!

I didn't want to ruin the original model with a mistake, so I decided to print a practice model. I wanted to build the model based on the 1993 Japanese GP at Suzuka, so I used parts from the Australian GP model and made minor modifications, and chopped down the rear wing to resemble the medium downforce spec. I also added Gurney flaps on the front wing, cutting out thin strips painted on both sides.

Experienced modellers will find the model very straightforward, but to me, F1 models are a big challenge, especially cars of this golden era. They look simple compared to today's machines, but misalignments will damage the look of the model very severely.

In the end, it came out OK, but I had multiple attempts on some parts, especially the rear cowling area. If I had built the original without any practice, I would have binned it for sure!!

I have some fond memories of the 2018 Suzuka GP weekend, although I did not see this car in person, I was mindblown just to be at the venue where my hero left various iconic moments...

You can purchase the model by giving them a message through Email or via Messenger (they respond quickly on FaceBook).

Thank you Henrich for sending me this precious parcel!!

Excellent work. Very clean. Looking forward to your next.

I'm still struggling trying to finish the STR14 Toro Rosso. Definitely multiple attempt required, plus instructions are lacking in clarity.

Thank you for the kind comments!! I forgot to mention that the printing was a bit of a disaster, I was building it and realized the black ink was smearing everywhere, and off camera, you can see slight smudging around the air inlet.. I used artist's fixative to somewhat fix the ink to the other parts, but I had a bit of fading around the edges of the tyres since I handle them a lot... It was an interesting experience..

Looks great. Much better than I usually manage.

Have you come across any current F1 models?

I would love to give Lando's McLaren a try.

Thanks!! Oh, Lando, it was so unfortunate for him last Sunday. Yes, as a huge Macca fan, I'd love to make the MCL35 in 1/24 or larger as well!!
I'm also dying for the '91 MP4/6, I'm hoping that someone could design one some day.

Currently, there are a few 2019/2020 cars freely available. Here are all of the models I currently know of.

2019/2020 RedBull and STR/Alpha Tauri Honda cars: https://global.honda/motorsports/vir.../top-page.html

2019 Williams FW42 and a few more kits by Robert Blaschke (these are absolutely cracking!!): modely.Blaschke.sk

2020 Mercedes W11 by F1Paperboy: https://www.facebook.com/F1PaperBoy-158650624190962/?ref=page_internal&eid=ARARhMnC4k_Izlk2qSm5knSQ9Z7 cQMJj3Sd9YN1a9JWIT-EwTqy3iljrttHnqlhi9tnh0G85zFvTad8K&hc_ref=ARQsRewz GMRBYANdRKRijidcHSveaK8DJc0A9qtqh0OAv0mDlJMC0tTGiZ R6iKk9Bqo&fref=nf&__xts__[0]=68.ARBErvK6tR2zikyPg3B1Y5uQuvHfZPLx7oX6NNnqjnuiic pVHfFFvJg9ifsObOFSIWiHE0WH1rcZNDnXInElZWyGBj-d6sBHvYnhj1xVGiTvIe76RKo_GSa1K0w9GyttyGh_b0O1NQzUY Z27UvjEt85O4KrqSeR9QS1whgSyeheFqDb57PbJuOc47Hi-b1Xhc9oU911YY_exVwhK89xh2P4XPF6bO0xljohEraXr11YnYD q50zc_0_Fd5uszzrAtfPT1GAlo-NVyTPwDRDYL4Jd-o_zBGUu1767fByUz7WRnMIE08camOea4nYiBZjiLWD9yKlm1ij Ax0uI20BUhINYEpQ&path=%2FF1PaperBoy-158650624190962%2F
