I get kinda confused about the XF-11. Every pic I find shows a single set of propellors, yet the info says it had contra rotating propellors (even the crash report says the cause was the right rear propeller reversing pitch).
*edit* aaah, somebody needs to learn to read captions. seems there was a 2nd one built that had regular propellers. |

Budd RB-1/C-93 Conestoga
Here's one for ya Aaron, The aircraft was designed, and built during WWII by Budd, a railroad car manufacturer, using stainless steel and fabric, no aluminum. Never made it into production although 17 aircraft were built. Sold to private owners after the war, one was used by Tucker for transporting his automobile around the country. I found a couple photos, but no drawings.

Think Aaron has mentioned that one, since they have a partial down at Pima.

Hey MURPH would this be odd enough to do?
Probably everyone has heard of the P-82 Twin Mustang, and a few less may know about the proposed Bf 109Z (or Zwilling, which means twin), and even fewer perhaps the proposals for a twin Spitfire. However the Soviet Union also looked at this concept of pairing up two single-seat fighters, and attempting to make it into a viable project. G.Belyaev sent to the NII VVS (the project office of the Sovie...t Air Force) a draft in early 1941 for the OI-1. This project was approved on 22 April 1941. This was the second fighter design from Belyaev, and used as its basis the Bell P-39 Airacobra, a type which became one of the most important imports from the US to the Soviet air Force during the Great Patriotic War. (This was the name given to WW2 by the Soviet Union). The starboard fuselage contained the single pilot, with the port devoted solely to fuel to give the design a good range, which was expected to be around 2000 km The undercarriage was arranged so that the nose wheels were utilized from the two fuselages, together with the main undercarriage under each wing, making it a quad-arrangement. Power came from two Klimov M-120UV liquid-cooled in-line engines, which produced 1800hp at sea-level and 1600hp at an altitude of 6000m. These powerplants were mounted in the middle of the fuselage, in the case of the starboard example, behind the cockpit, driving the propellers by shafts. Twin radiators were fitted into the leading edge of each wing near to the wing roots. Armament consisted of the standard two 23-mm cannon firing through the propeller shaft as in the P-39, with allowance for 81 shells each gun. Around the nose of the port fuselage were to be mounted four 12.7-mm ShKAS machine-guns, two on the top, in the same fashion as on the P-39, and two more underneath with allowance for 250 rounds for each gun. A further four 12.7-mm ShKAS machine-guns with 500 rounds per gun were mounted in the centre wing-section, between the two fuselages. Disposable loads could comprise of small anti-personnel bombs, right up to either two x 250kg or one x 500kg bombs. However more conventional designs from Lavochkin, MiG and Yakovlev received the eventual backing of the NII VVS and the OI-1 became another could-have-been. This illustration shows different views of what the Belyaev OI-1 could have looked like. |
