Yeah. I found pictures of one with a brownish color mixed in, and the dazzle pattern on the wings as well.

True. Another complication was the old-style film, which was sensitive only to blue light. This film made the blue field of the US flag seem lighter than the red stripes. So it's virtually impossible to determine the actual shade of grey used on the real plane.

Panchromatic film, BTW, became available in the 1930s. It was still black and while, but sensitive to all colors, so gave a much more accurate grey scale. But it cost more, so the old-style film remained in use pretty much throughout WW II. Only if a photo includes flags or insignia can you know for sure which film was used for a picture.

There is a good source for anyone who wants to do a recolor of either or both of the Brewster F2A-1s that were painted in the Barclay schemes for the 1940 Carrier Division 1 camouflage tests: Peter Freeman, Wings of the Fleet: US Navy & Marine Corps Aviation 1919-1941, On Target Special, Ardington, Oxfordshire, UK: The Aviation Workshop Publications Ltd., 2010.

Freeman did extensive research to produce four-view color paintings of the two F2A-1s, the two Douglas TBD-1s, the two Vought SB2U-1s, and the two Northrop BT-1s that were used in the tests. In addition to his four-views paintings and scrap views, he provides several clear photographic images of each aircraft. The colors are based on the standard Navy paint formulas used in the test, which are well documented.

The book seems to be out of print and used copies are rather expensive, but you might be able to get a copy through a library or interlibrary loan.

Can always trust Don to have info on the most obscure subjects . Way to go! Wonderful resource - yep, interlibrary is a great and cheap way to get info. Thanks for that.

Well, SOME obscure subjects. I wouldn't dare to presume to expatiate on, for example, Canadian aviation history.

Cheers,

Don

Yeah, but the coin of the realm in this Forum is the ability to build and design paper models. I get about a C+ in the first category and I know from nothing in the design category, so I am usually the one in awe over the models displayed here.

Cheers,

Don

Don't sell yourself short Don. 75% of designing is having the correct information about the model.
