Pima visit 3-7-2020

Just got back from visiting Pima. This was a special visit, because it was a gathering of a Facebook group called "Fans of Pima Air Museum". One of the members works at the museum, and was able to arrange a tour of the restoration area. This is gonna be picture intensive, so apologies to anybody still on dial-up.

I also took a bunch of videos that I'm going to upload to my YouTube channel.

I found the BF-109. Unfortunately, it's still under wraps. Literally

Also nearby was a secret not announced project that might make some sour Kraut if I let it out of the bag. Hopefully nobody can identify it by this shot

The Mohave is in for refurbishment

I always thought the Mohave's engines were mounted straight in the pods, and some kind of gearbox magic got the power to the main rotor. Nope, the engines are angled to drive straight to the rotor gearbox.

A little fun stuff from the boneyard. This is an ejection seat training rig. Everybody thought it would make an awesome carnival ride.

I always thought what bits of the Budd Conestoga they had on display was all they had. Nope, they've got all of it. Anybody know how to spot weld stainless steel?

Now for the sad pictures/ Here's our WB-57. Destined to remain this way until NASA decided to stop butchering it for spare parts.
Pima visit 3-7-2020-img_20200307_111608-1-.jpg

Something that has never show up in pictures, and that I had no idea of. The WB-57 has auxiliary jet engines under the wings.

Aah! Naked B-52. The NB-52 is in for a refresh. They say they won't fix the notch in the wing.

I got this close !...! to seeing the XC-99. One of the members of the Pima Fan group works at AMARG across the street. Towards the end of the day, he says "If you're interested, I can get you onto base to see the XC-99." MY hand went up so fast, I almost swatted down an airplane. Unfortunately, we ran out of time before we could get everything organized.

There's talk of making this get-together a yearly event, with the restoration area tour and possible trip into AMARG as well.

Hmmmm...F-107. We could use one in 1/48 or larger. The only one I'm aware of is in 1/72.

Of course, there's a NASA version. 😊
