Surgicon 2015 Des Moines Iowa

This is the show that I spoke of in my earlier thread about a midwest "convention" for us paper modelers. It will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015.

After careful thought and discussions with the IPMS Plastic Surgeons, I have decided to acquire a vendor table for the express purpose of promoting modeling with paper.

I am planning on having presentations/demonstrations throughout the day (see download section of this forum for a copy of the outline I plan to use) and display completed projects and Works in progress.

If any of you folks out there would like to participate, in the presentations/display or the actual contest more info can be found here:

While I don't have any plans to vend anything in particular, I would be willing to represent any one who would like to do so (Ecardmodels, Dave Winfield, fiddlersgreen, etc.). Just drop me a PM and we'll work something out.

Starting to get excited about this show for some reason. I hope a few of you are close enough and free that weekend to join me in promoting paper!

Still trying to decide how I'm going to arrange my display and demo area and if I will enter the actual contest with anything.

The show has come and gone. Here is my recap:

Attendence seemed lighter this year, not sure why. Taxes, too many shows to close together, or too nice of weather?

Regardless, My wife and I were there and we had a good day.

We started our day bright and early Saturday morning. We made an obligatory stop in Pella IA (you know the place they make doors and windows) and visited Jaarsma Bakery. They have the best baked goods. Especially the blueberry cream cheese muffin type things they sell that literally melt in your mouth. They are baked good versions of crack.

Made it to the show shortly before the doors were open to the public and got everything set-up. I had a few things for sale but only sold one thing. I was prepared to do seminars but the atmosphere wasn't really right for that. I did answer lots of questions, gave out a few cards with websites listed on them and seemed to generate some interest.

Willygoat's participation at Omacon the week before helped start the discussion and I did my best to continue it.

My wife took up duties as the demonstration person (albeit unintentionally) by building a small Schreiber tudor cottage. She built the whole thing at the show and rekindled an interest in building more.

At the end, we packed up and had us a nice meal at Zombie Burger and Drink Lab. Oh it was so good! My wife especially found the fried brussels sprouts to be a tasty new experience.

OK enough of that, on to the pictures I took of our day...
