how about

The early part of 2010 in Sacramento, CA....
Given that much time I could probably find a cheap (read as free) venue.

I could probably make it to that. There's a lot of points of interest in and near Sacramento to commend it to folks coming from farther away, too.

Sacramento is about a 10 hour drive for me and sometime I could maybe make if I found transport.

Definitely a nice area.

Worth pointing out that within a 3-hr or so radius of Sacramento are:

1) redwood country
2) San Francisco Bay Area
3) Sacramento/San Joaquin delta
4) Lake Tahoe
5) wine country
6) much of the Sierra Nevada foothill corridor & high country
7) Yosemite

Lots to see and do!

Im thinking rather than trying to find a hotel or conference room- to find a place in a high traffic area, ie one of the local museums.... I think one object of a get together like this would be to have a large number of visitors who have no idea about paper modeling.
perhaps something in oldtown sacramento...

You might give the Towne Auto Musuem a check out. They've done several model car shows there that some of the Central Cal plastic guys that I know have been involved in. I don't know if the Railroad Musuem has enough room. A little out of the way, but actually not that far from the airport is the Hays Truck Museum and adjacent Agricultural Equipment Museum in Woodland, might be worth checking. I made the grand tour of them last year after the NASCAR race at Sears Point. Wouldn't mine another excuse to get back there.

Sacramento, especially old town, is very beautiful indeed...just do not drink the water...tasted like dirt to me...of course that was many years ago...maybe they fixed it by now.

Vegas... tons of cheap rooms and food. I wouldn't mind SLC either, since I live there; but I have to admit Vegas is a little more fun.
