2016 International Paper Model Convention

Hi all,

Yes, a few days after this year's event, it is time to clear your calendars, or hold some Saturdays open.

We will be hosted by the Hampton Inn & Suites in Sterling Virginia.

And the theme for next year's event will be Space: Real and Imagined.

So get your rockets and satellites, and your Greys and starships ready.

The date is still being worked on, and we will update when we get it

Rick

Once again, I'm making plans to not attend. Maybe I'll get lucky this time and get to go.

I have to ask, again, if there can be any consideration of a different location for next years event.
I'd love to see it come further north west...maybe in the direction of Dayton Ohio?
Even if only just for one time.
Ohio, Michigan, Indiana?

Not only to accommodate me...Dayton is still a full days drive for me.
but to accommodate and entice some others who haven't been to an IPMC yet.
...like Chris G?

I'd also like to suggest mid October, rather than November.
Better weather for one thing.
And if Halloween is a concern, make it before, rather than after.

Dave,

it has been said, and mentioned a couple of times, you can use the IPMC name for any gathering anyone at any time and anywhere wants to put together.

so if there are a bunch of people in the Great Lakes area who want to set something up, they can do so.

the normal time frame is in October, it was pushed back to November this year mainly due to some people's schedules on the organizing committee.

I didn't ask if I could create another event.
I have no interest in creating another "IPMC".
I just asked if there was any consideration for holding the IPMC in another location to accomodate those who can't easily get to Virginia.
Obviously there is not.
Thanks.

about a decade or so ago, we had discussions on moving it around.

problems we encountered:
Who will do the leg work to find a hotel or hall to host the event
How will those who display travel, car, train, airplane, distance to an international airport
How will the surroundings find out about the event.
And there were a couple of other suggestions, which escape me at the present time.

This discussion did happen really before the expansion of social media, so if this subject would come up again in the future, the outcome might be different

That is why it was agreed upon that if anyone wanted to put together an event like the one in Virginia, they can do so, and use IPMC as their banner.

Rick

Looking at the Papermodelers Map (How's that for a plug? Didja see what I did there?) there is a large concentration of PM's living around the Chicago area. Chris G and others should be able to make it with a relatively short trip. Conversely, there are a bunch of PM's living up in and around the Toronto (Dave) and Detroit areas which should make for a well-attended event. Now that I've said that, no, I'll not be able to set such an event up as I live on the Gulf Coast and have no idea of what would be involved in those areas. (ducking for cover)

@elliott - Well, as you've opened that can of worms, would Little Rock be to far for you?

I know there are about 10 of us in/around the D/FW to Mississippi to Atlanta area.

Might be an idea for us in this area.

All,

Firstly, many thanks and well done to everyone who participated in the 2015 IPMC. We had another great convention. I was particularly pleased about the number of knowledgeable walk-ins, some of whom may be back next year as exhibitors. Roger's presentation on the 2001 space station was a splendid highlight, and I'm looking forward to seeing the model itself next year. When Roger and I compared notes, we realized that we probably saw the movie in the same theater in Pittsburgh when it premiered! Also, I can't believe that I actually got an award for that op-art Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Looking ahead to 2016: the tentative dates are 21-23 October, probably in the same location as past years. I'll post updates here as soon as possible. Also, if you're not on my email notification/reminder list and would like to be, just drop me a PM or send me an email (ansoff [at] alumni.vanderbilt.edu).

Rick has pretty well summed up our past discussions about moving the IPMC to another location. The big requirement is a local team that can do the logistics. Also, there's a timing issue. We'll need to reserve our 2016 dates with the hotel by mid-December at the latest, which probably makes it impractical to think about going elsewhere next year. If anyone wants to pursue that option, I'd recommend shooting for 2017 (which will be the 20th IPMC, by the way).

SF&G,

Peter Ansoff

I just had what could be a crazy idea for 2017. Since it is the 20th year, how about a nationwide convention? 4 or 5 locations linked with webcams and skype, or whatever's popular at the time.
