Lecture on Soviet World War II Women Aviators

For those of you who live within driving distance of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, USA:

Dr. Reina Pennington, Professor of History at Norwich University, will give a talk on "Wings, Women and War: Soviet Airwomen in World War II Combat," at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC) at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, June 17, 2009.

Most of these heroic women flew the Polikarpov PO-2, so Dr. Pennington’s presentation should be of particular interest for those who enjoyed the build threads by Chris Walas ( http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/aviation/2778-po-2-best-paper-model-1-35-a.html ) and Chris Coyle (http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/kit-reviews/2706-polikarpov-po-2-kartonowa-kolekcia-1-33-a.html ) with much useful additional information by Leif Ohlsson.

AHEC, with its Army History Trail, Museum, and Military History Institute is always worth a visit. http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec/index.cfm The Military History Institute Library and Archive is a great place to do research on any U.S. Army-related item, on military history, or about a relative who served in the U.S. Army or its related organizations. There is an institutional connection between our Paper Modelers’ Forum and AHEC. Last month, we had a display at the annual Army Heritage Day (http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/museums-air-shows-events-get-togethers/2879-16-may-2009-army-heritage-day-paper-modelers-display.html).

And keep in mind that the Perspectives in Military History lectures and Kleber Memorial Readings take place throughout the year. Here’s the schedule: http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec/VEC/events.cfm

Later this year or early next year, I will be part of the program, giving a talk about Army amphibious operations in the Korean War.

If you plan to attend Dr. Pennington’s lecture, please let me know so that we can get together before or after her presentation. It’s always great to meet members of the Forum.

Sounds interesting Don. When I read the title of the thread though, I almost thought you were going to lecture us here in the forum

and Glen, you wouldn't need one either.

if a digital recording would be created, you can download it as normal, and just listen to it in your media player on your computer.

so if there is any digital recording, then you can go ahead and download it and listen to it

As fate would have it, I'll be in Pittston (near Wilkes-Barre) next week. I am going to make every effort to make that talk.

Boosed, if I can actually make it, I'll keep a look out for you. I'll be wearing the same hat as my profile picture, so I'll be easy to spot.

Say, will there be a book or anything for sale?

It would be great to see you, Major D.

As for the issue of making the lecture available: the Military History Institute video tapes most of the Perspectives and Kleber lectures. I will check to see if any distribution outside the AHEC/Army War College community is possible.

This evening, Lil and I attended Reina Pennington's very interesting lecture on Soviet women aviators. She focused primarily on the women who flew Yak-1s, 7s, and 9bs in two squadrons of the 586th Fighter Air Regiment rather than the "Night Witches" who flew the PO-2s (once again, the fighter pilots get the glory).

Previous lectures have been video taped and are available here: Video Lectures

I anticipate that Dr. Pennington's lecture will eventually be available there.
