Just to clarify, I would love to say hello to any and all fellow paper modellers
but this show is a very small. The building isn't that big. And from the photos of past shows, I can see that the limited number of model tables and vendors are packed in fairly tightly. I would hate to see anyone drive a great distance and be disappointed. ... The Ajax show would be of interest me... but I'm bothered again by the bias towards plastic. I'm a bit confused. The show is titled as a "Scale Model Contest" The Toronto Area Scale Model Show & Contest ...not specifically an IPMS event or Plastic Model event. And yet, they have one single all encompassing "paper" category. I'd like to clarify, are all the categories specifically for plastic only? If I want to put my Tank model in a specific tank related category, can I do so? I'm not going to drive 3 hours and take half a dozen models to compete and find out they all go into one "best paper model (general)" category. I'd go as a Vendor, but it looks like all Vendor spots are filled.

Don't worry. Be happy.
Dave
Ajax is an IPMS event. It's on their national website. But even if it is not , the P in IPMS has always been plastic and not paper. I say, bring your paper models , put it on display and let people enjoy them. It's a bonus when they can't tell it is paper. We unfortunatly have very few paper modelers in comparisons , so at best we are guests at their shows. In the past , I entered my paper models in scratch built category. It's always a hit or miss My expectations are always low , but I'm always happy to display. See you Saturday Isaac

I'm well aware that the P in IPMS stands for plastic.
And I'm grateful that some IPMS events consider Paper as a category. IPMS specific events are usually labeled as IPMS events (local, regional and national). The "Ajax 36 Scale Model Show" is referenced on the IPMS website calendar as a scale model event. It doesn't say that it is an IPMS event. The Ajax 36 Scale Model Show website states: Quote:
Once again...I question the association of this event with the IPMS. I've already sent them an email asking about this. As a scale modeler, potential competitor and long distance attendee, I think its fair to ask and clarify if the main competition categories will unfairly be for plastic only (even though the show advertises itself as a "scale model show")

I got an email response from John Wong of the Ajax Scale Model Show last night...
he relates that while the Ajax Show is not an actual IPMS event, the show does have it roots in local IPMS clubs. The majority of the participants are "plastic" guys and the Rules are IPMS based. Not having the proper understanding of paper modelling also makes it very difficult for them to judge a paper model against a plastic one. So, I can understand the ignorance in that respect. John does feel that multiple separate categories are needed for paper models but it comes back to the basic knowledge and judging problems again. Unlike this weekend's event in my area, the Ajax event is a full size model show. More along the lines of what an IPMS member is used to. And I would love to go. Unfortunately, its a long drive for me...and I would be restricted to what models I could enter. As I mentioned, I am unwilling to enter multiple models in one all encompassing category ("best paper model"). And there are no vendor spots available.

As you have seen, I compete, in the normal, plastic, categories, and do quite well, But you have to show them, how to judge your kits using their criteria. We cannot expect them to rate our work, without some type of comparison to work from. We must give them the base line to work from.
