1: Alan and his new camera: “I think you point this side toward the model.”

2-14: Alan’s models.

15: Alan and Lil discuss the modalities of paper modeling with Scott Reinmann in the background and Russ Haigh to the right. Alan: “You model cats?”

16. Kevin: “Well, I’ve modeled Tigers and Panthers."

1-2: The Steve Brown Collection. Steve is one of the four founding members of the IPMC and the only person to attend every one of the 20 IPMC events. He is also the editor of the Paper Model FAQ and traditionally assists in the auction, where he traditionally bids against himself three times at least once each year.

3-4: The Stephen Marshall Collection. Stephen is known for his rare, unusual, and occasionally zany models.

5-7: The Rev. Thomas Davies Clay Collection. In Image 5 Thomas explains ecclesiastical paper structures to beguiled visitors. Thomas’s cathedrals are on display at Catholic University (https://www.facebook.com/CatholicUni...5785967478810/). His and Kathleen’s travels are set forth in his Cathedral Quest page: www.cathedralquest.com.

8-10: The Jack Colin Collection. Jack won the Greg Perry Silk Purse out of a Sow’s Ear Award for his Raiders of the Lost Ark flying wing and shared the special award with Linda Kemp for the Best Misinterpretation of the Theme Award for his chess set of “Thanks and Tankards” (each tankard had the word “Thanks” inscribed on it in a different language). If we had had an award for the best handle bar moustache worn with a tweed flat cap and Cossack boots, he would have won that, too.

11-12: Greg Perry and his Dad (on the left) displayed Greg’s superb models, including his Most Unusual Model Award-winning Kalinin Phoenix (The Flying Nightmare).

13-16: The Kevin Stephens Collection. Kevin’s Dragon Wagon M26 tractor won the People’s Choice Award two years ago. This year, the completed M25 Dragon Wagon (M26 tractor with M15 trailer and, oh by the way, an M4A3(75)W Sherman tank perched on top) won the award and has been retired from competition.

17. Russ Haigh.

18. The Peter Ansoff Collection.

19. The Lil Boose Collection. One of the visitors, a young girl, took a long look at one of Lil's small cat models, then wrote the little cat's number on her ballot and put it in the box. As she left, Lil said, "I'm a contender!"

20. Colonel Marshall Fletcher, USAF, Retired. An annual visitor who flew F-51 Mustangs and F-86 Sabrejets in Korea, F-100s in the 50s, and C-130s in Vietnam. Marshall is a model builder – brass locomotives and other metal models from scratch.

1-4: The Linda Kemp Collection. In Image 2, Linda chats with Steve Brown and John Glessner. Image 3 is her famous cigar box filled with “64 buildings and 1 piano.” Linda has often won awards for her table displays, theme models, unusual models, and special awards. This time, she shared with Jack Colin the glory of the Best Misinterpretation of the Theme Award for her (fish) tanks and tankards (Image 4).

5-8: Roger Griffith getting his 2001: A Space Odyssey Space Station and EVA Pod ready for display and some shots of his models. Roger has previously won the People’s Choice Award for his Space Station, which slowly rotates in its illuminated shadow box while the Blue Danube Waltz plays in the background. This time, his Panther tank won the Theme Award.

9-18: Pete Heesch displaying part of his immense collection for sale, especially including the World War II and early post-war collection of Wallis Rigby models, original Jack Armstrong Wheaties gliders, Nabisco Shredded Wheat gliders, and other models of that era that were part of the treasure trove he acquired from Lou Dausse, who established and ran Paper Models International (PMI). The Kellogg gliders in Image 9 are actually made of very thin sheets of wood.

19: Jack Colin prospecting for treasure.

20: Peter Ansoff (the driving force of the IPMC) huddles with a visitor over an Alcan 1/24 1929 Ford Roadster. A visitor, Jack Colin, and John Glessner in the background.

Not quite so loud, but it was designed and first published by Airdave.

I notice Lil and Anne are quite into the animal figures like me. I even went as far as buying a cheap Canon printer in order to access their 'Premium' models. Well worth the £30 cost. There are some excellent free models in their 'My Image Garden'. I wouldn't particularly recommend the printer though, but access to the garden is not possible without a Canon printer hooked up and installed. I think it must be a Pixma ink printer too, but I'm not certain of that. Surely they won't deny access to their expensive printer owners.

I didn't design it...I just surfed and found...and reused.
But thanks for the credit!

oh crap...did I just admit to being a "Like" pirate?
I wonder who'll jump on that one.

Final Boose Images

1-4: Carl Ericson’s beautiful ships. Images 1 and 2 show the Cunard liner SS Ivernia, long used to transport emigrants to America – “Did your ancestors arrive on Ivernia?” asks Carl – and torpedoed on 1 January 1917 off Cape Matapan in the Mediterranean.

Images 3 and 4 show the German World War II auxiliary cruiser and maritime raider Atlantis disguised as a Norwegian freighter.

Although Carl brought only two ship models this time, they are finely detailed and beautiful, and he displayed them with historical information, photographs, menus, and other documentation.

And finally, my display (The Don Boose Collection) – Images 5-14. The mainstays of my theme display of tanks and tankers (Image 6) were two 1/32 Fiddlers Green models: Renault FT and Whippet (Image 7). I also (Image 8) built and displayed the IPMC17 20th Anniversary free handout Sherman tank designed by Matt Bergstrom; included Dave Winfield’s Kool Wheelz wooden block tank truck; and pushed the envelope a bit by displaying the KW 1930s milk delivery van in the shape of a milk bottle, claiming “Not a tanker, but it resembles one.” The little M3 light tank is a Cliff Button Paper Tiger Armaments model that Cliff designed for the annual Paper Modelers at Army Heritage Days event.

Lil and I displayed the Kool Wheelz models that we have built over the past year (Images 9 and 10), and I did some work on the Elvira Macabre Mobile during the event (Image 11).

12-14: I had previously displayed all the other models, including the shop-worn “Bowl of Airplanes” (Trotskiys shrunk to 1/100 and visible in Image 5). Among my own models are also a Douglas D-588-1 Skystreak built by Don Weeks, a Geebee racer built by John Glessner, a pair of MiG-21s in Korean People’s Army Air Force markings built by Ray Smith and John Glessner and presented to me a few years ago, and a Vickers Medium Mark I built by my friend and colleague, Dr. (Colonel, retired) Jim Scudiari, the Chief Historian of the U.S. Army History and Education Center.

The rest of the images were taken at the Banquet.

15. The high table (not an honor – it’s just higher than the other tables): Harry Fry, Rob Delpizzo, half-hidden Pete Heesch, Scott Reinmann’s back, Kelah Clark, and Roger Griffith, and the back of Jack Colin’s head – note snazzy tweed flat cap. Cossack boots not visible.

16. Peter Ansoff addresses the multitude.

17. Anne McCombs presents Jack Colin with the Best Misinterpretation of the Theme Award.

18. Greg Perry receives with consternation the award (an unusual paper model of a circus) for the Most Unusual Model.

19. I present Roger with a tank-like model (ISU-122 assault gun) as his award for the Best Theme Model.

20 Alan presents an actual tank model (T-37) to Don Weeks as his award for the Best Table Display. When we next see that model, we expect it will be at 1/50 scale.

And that’s all, folks . . . from me, at least. I hope many others took photos and will share them.

Many thanks to Peter and everyone else who helped make this an enjoyable and memorable International Paper Modelers’ Convention.

Don
