So, I don't know exactly how to respond.

Perhaps it is an IPMS issue in Canada.
Or an IPMS issue somewhere.

However, I have entered, been categorized in different categories, and have had an overwhelmingly welcome response in my region.

I have entered into categories with the plastic models, and been judged, and won.

I have entered into categories listed as paper, and won Best of Show. Including plastic models.

In my IPMS region, paper models are accepted, judged, and awarded in accordance with the IPMS standard.

Perhaps it is not the IPMS/club folks you need to have issue with for the fact they do not give you special considerations, but meet them at their standard.

Knowledge is power.

You are correct Ray...but this isn't an IPMS issue...in my opinion.
I also disagree with Isaac, in this case.

In the same year I attended two IPMS events for the first time
and it was the first time out with the Paper Models for me.
One was an IPMS club in London Ontario.
The other was IPMS Hamilton (who host the show known as HeritageCon)

The reception in London was amazing.
These guys were not able to immediately accomodate me as a Paper Modeller in competition
but they were apologetic and understanding.
They were interested in everything about what I do and we talked about future involvement.

I was also a Vendor...paid for Table space...and the reception was also top notch.
Everything you would expect...smiles, help with moving stuff, checking on my table and seeing how I was doing,
and a general interest in what I had to offer.

HeritageCon was a whole different story.
It started at the door, when I arrived as a paid Vendor.
No smiles. No help. Just a point to a table.
In fact, a pretty cold reception I thought.
And without even knowing what I was selling!

Then, when I registered models for competition (my first ever) I got more of the same blase attitude, a general feeling of "why am I helping you?".
Entering into the competition was a joke...I complained about categories and where my models would go...
there was no willingness to talk to me, they sent instructions through a kid working the floor.
They were unwilling to accomodate my entries and as far as I could see, did not judge them in competition. (I watched)
As if maybe, they were deliberately ignored, since I made a stink at the beginning of the event? I don't know.

I spoke to a few people during the show, that stopped at my Vendors table,
who claimed to be members of that club and they were distressed to hear of the attitude.
I got the impression from things said, that there was already a problem.
One guy was asking for specifics, like names (which i couldn't give) because he wanted to "bring it up at a meeting".

For me, this wasn't a "plastic vs paper" thing.
Or an IPMS thing.
I know other people in the IPMS, who have been very gracious to me.
This was a local club problem, and an attitude problem from a group that was acting snobbish.
Maybe they want nothing to do with outside people or groups.
If so, they shouldn't host an open Competition.

I already understand how tolerant I must be of IPMS groups that allow Paper categories.
When I do the Toronto Scale Model (Ajax 37) later this year,
they will be accomodating Paper categories for the first time.
But it will understandably be a problem for them when it comes to judging.
(I'm going to have to help with that)
It will take some cooperation and assistance for them to adapt and accomodate.
Its up to me to make just as much effort as them.
But I have already spoken with three top members of that Club, and they have been nothing but accepting and interested so far.
So, I believe it just comes down to the attitude of the people invloved.

Smile Back on topic

I am really hoping we can get the Toronto paper modelers together for another mini meeting.

Name the place and a time and lets work on it.

If we can get a table for paper model at Heritage Con I would say it’s a good place for get together, regardless of some guy poor disposition. I’ve been to this show for the past 4 years and always happy with experience which btw wasn’t much different that Ajax or Toronto.

For what is worth this is my 5 cents opinion...

It's a matter of plastic modeler attitudes. I left the club scene some time ago when I realized that you were almost classed as a wannabe modeler if you didn't have the latest model kit or all of the after market doodads. That's what I like about paper. If you have to resort to free models due to budgetary restraints, you aren't frowned upon for not buying the latest and greatest models out there. Nothing personal against the plastic people, but there can be a lot of snobbery among them. And yes, I still do plastic as I have 500 unbuilt kits calling out to me.

Question HeritageCon Model contest this coming Sunday March 26th

The event is a week away

HeritageCon 9Hobby Show & Model Contest - Home

The largest PLASTIC model show in Canada.

My effort to secure a table for the paper models to be displayed has failed ( as predicted ).

So as not to belabor the point of paper in a plastic venue, I still plan to attend the show as an observer and just enjoy the models and the full scale planes. It is a great venue.

Hope some of the Toronto paper modelers are able to join. Let me know, I am willing to drive if we meet somewhere central.

Thats the largest plastic show in Canada?
I don't think so.
I've been there....I don't think so.
Is that what they claim?
Maybe it has grown...I shouldn't comment.

Anyway...I'm not sure I will be available, but I'll see what I can do.

Its not a show that interest me much.
I've already expressed my feelings regarding that club (and my past experience with them).
I've also seen the Museum, which is a nice place to visit once, but I wouldn't pay full price to see it twice.

While the model meet is on, I think admission is cheaper though.
And, it is the only place you can stand under an airworthy Lancaster (on this side of the pond).

If the weather is good, its worth it to step outside and view the planes out there.
To accomodate this event, most of the aircraft in the building are pushed to one side of the building, and some go outside.
But there are also a few permanent outdoor aircraft to see.

Gary? are you going?

LOL Just noticed this in the HeritageCon Info:

Quote:
Materials:
Models may be constructed from any Material.

Contest Info - HeritageCon 9Hobby Show & Model Contest

This was in their rules when I attended 3 or 4 years ago, and yet I was not allowed to compete in any category against plastic kits.

I was also told a "base" constituted a "Diorama" (my entry models had bases).
And yet:

Quote:
Bases:
A single Model may be displayed on a stand or simple, reasonably sized base. Bases will not be considered in the Judging, unless entered in the Diorama Category.
