Sorry I Missed It

Folks I could not attend the USEHEC activity this year. We bought a house in Sanford Fl and were busy moving from Fort Myers and setting up house. It is a historic house and luckily had a very nice room that my wife insisted be turned into a workshop. Attached are some photos of house and new shop. It is the best facility that I have ever had. I intend to churn out some nice models here.

Very nice. You got a good one that would allow a room like that to be turned into a workshop, instead of the greenhouse

Report Continues

A beautiful house and a magnificent workshop, Roger. Hope to see you in October in Sterling and at this event next year.

Meanwhile, on with the report and images:

1. Lil Boose: “Would you two young men like to try your hands at some paper models?”

“Yes, Ma’am.”

“After you build these, I want you to come back next year and show them to me.”

“Yes, Ma’am.”

As they leave, in a low voice, “I’ll bet she’s a retired drill sergeant.”

2. Anne McCombs and Lil with the Canon Creative Maneki Nekko cat that Anne built during the event.

3-5. Anne’s models. Anne builds a variety of models, military and non-military. She is an aeronautical engineer whose day job is restoring aircraft for the National Air and Space Museum. She and Jack are both pilots, and they own and fly a two-place Pazmany sport plane

6. Peter Ansoff at work. Peter orchestrates the annual International Paper Modelers’ Convention in Sterling, Virginia (http://www.ipmc-info.org/) and organizes the participation of paper modelers in the annual Northern Virginian IPMS convention as well as participating annually in the Paper Modelers at Army Heritage Days event.

7-9. Peter’s models.

10. Linda Kemp at work. Linda is known for her innovative models. One year the theme for the IPMC was “non-military tracked vehicles.” Linda designed and built a fish with treads – a Fish Tank.

11. Linda talking with a Highlander of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment (Black Watch) of the French and Indian War while he admires John Dell’s heavy bombers.

12. Linda is also a U.S. Army veteran who served as a sergeant with a Pershing missile unit in Germany (77th Field Artillery at Lagerleth, Germany). Among the visitors, she found a fellow Pershing missileer, John Sproat, formerly of the 2/44th Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

13. Linda and John talk Pershing talk. “Do you remember . . .”

14-18. Linda’s models and display.

19. Linda’s IPMC award-winning mouse, Miss Isabella Pauline Margarite Consuelo Mouse, whose initial spell out IPMC.

20. More veterans: Ray Brown, B Company 2/7th Cavalry (GarryOwen), Vietnam, 1967-68; Dennis Shrauder, 133 Combat Engineer Battalion, Vietnam, 1967-68; Bryan Shrauder, 1/104th Infantry, Iraq, 2005-2006; Colonel (Ret) Don Boose, 2/12 Cavalry (Blue Lancers), Korea, 1962-63, Advisor Team 57 (Sr Advisor, 1/14 Infantry, ARVN) Tra Vinh, Vietnam, 1966-67.

Still more images of modelers, models, reenactors, and armored vehicles to come.

Thanks for the additional pictures Don. I want to give a shout out for #15, Linda Kemp's little village (Fiddler's Green English village, I think?). What a charming display!

Modelers and Reenactors

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Kevin.

Good eye, Neil. Linda’s little village is the Fiddler’s Green village miniaturized. “Save a tree, print small,” is her motto.

Don – One of the great pleasures of these events is the chance to spend some time with you, to learn from you, and to talk paper models.

To continue:

1. Justin Harper, Karl Warner (who is a member of this Forum), and Colonel Jeff Mangelsdorf, the Director of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, on the History Trail, which, like USAHEC and the Military History Institute Library and Archives, is open to the public year round. The History Trail contains permanent outdoor exhibits illustrating the history of the U.S. Army from Colonial times to today, including buildings, vehicles, artillery pieces, and other artifacts “telling the Army’s story, one Soldier at a time.” The American Civil War era snake rail fence in the background is the symbol of U.S. National Military Parks and historic U.S. Army facilities.

2-3. Ann McMillin and her models. As she explained in her post in this thread, Ann is a Carlisle resident who came to Army Heritage Days a few years ago, became enamored of paper modeling, and is now part of the Paper Modelers at Army Heritage Days team.

4. Jack Colin at work with an image of Soldiers of the 21st Infantry Regiment (Gimlets), 24th Division, during the Korean War on the wall behind him.

5. Jack’s models of Graf Zeppelin and Arizona and a piece of deck from the battleship North Carolina

6-9. Jack, resting between visitors, and his models. Image 9 is of his SMS Göben and Russian pre-dreadnought Oslyabya [Ослябя].

10. Young visitors.

Reenactors:

11. WWII Army nurses

12. The nurses with a WWI Australian soldier at John Dell’s heavy bomber display

13-14. American Civil War soldiers.

15. WWII paratroopers of the 17th and 82nd Airborne Divisions.

16. NKVD security officer, with a captured Mauser pistol, attached to a Russian partisan unit, Eastern Front, WWII.

17. Civil War winter cabins.

18. Headquarters, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, WWII, Europe.

19. World War I Doughboys.

20. Vietnam Firebase.

More in a couple of hours: lots of John Dell B-17s and B-24s, more of the History Trail, and tanks in action.

John Dell Day

The first image is of John Glessner (DrLaser), on his way to his and Rose’s new home in Seattle, presenting a B-17-related memento from the Boeing Museum of Flight to John Dell.

The rest of the images are of John’s B-17 and B-24 (and one escorting P-51D) models. John’s research is meticulous and his graphic work is extraordinary. He also researches the history of every airplane he models and included historic images of each of his models.

Image 11: RAF Liberator IV with the Memphis Belle work-in-progress and Derek’s little blue house in the background. The little house in the very center of the display is a kind of homage to USAAF bombing history. During World War II, bombing ranges had a little structure (a shack) at the center of the bombing target area since the Norden bombsight worked best when the target had a vertical dimension. If a bomb actually hit the shack, then it was dead center on target. As late as the 1980s, my Air Force comrades used the term “Shack!” to mean “on target.”

Image 16: B-17D of the 11th Bomb Group flown to the Philippines by Captain Colin Kelly, later killed in action flying a different airplane. This aircraft was captured intact by the Japanese and used for flight testing. You can see it in Japanese markings in Image 16.

Image 18: B-17s captured by the Japanese and, center, B-17C 40-2074, the first U.S. aircraft to be destroyed by enemy action, Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941.

Image 19: Photos of 40-2074 at Hickam Field and of the captured B-17s in flight over Mount Fuji.

Next: More on the History Trail, military vehicles, and the tanks in action.
