That's a nice one Dave. I'm particularly a fan of Bockscar and the Enola Gay, as they were built at the old Martin bomber plant here in Omaha. They were also brought back here for the atomic bomb refit. The plant is still there today, on the site of Offutt AFB. I believe it now houses a huge workout and training facility.

I need to get back. The last time I was there the XB-70 was still out front - I believe they built a whole new building that houses it now, IIRC. Definitely my favorite museum to go to though, so long as you don't count all of the Smithsonian 'branches' as a single museum.

Yes! First time I was there (about 1975, I was 14) the Valkyrie was sitting outside!!
I remember that now!
I forgot that this is the same museum!

And this last time (2 summers ago) ...I don't remember seeing the Valkyrie anywhere. Apparently they have a large storage of aircraft not on display?

It is so very different now...a completely new and totally different Museum
(compared to what I visited back in the 70s)

You want to be really jealous? I used to be stationed at Wright-Patt and my best friend was the Dir. of Operations at the museum. Every now and again, on Friday evenings, he and I would break out the manlift and photograph the airplanes after the museum was closed. We crawled around in many of them, too.

I was like the proverbial kid in a candy shop! I'll get Bockscar for you and search my files. I may even have interiors...no promises on that because it's been such a long time!

I visited the NASM's Paul Garber restoration facility years ago and saw Enola Gay during her restoration. I got to nose around in her! What an incredible journey!

If you are ever in the area, a trip to Silver Hill for the restoration tour is an absolute must!

I used to be stationed at Wright-Patt and was a member of the local IPMS chapter (back when I still modeled in plastic). We had our own display cases and met in the Cafeteria on Mon nights after hours (under a previous museum Director). A few years they were down to just the experimental aircraft display case, but I think it's all gone now.

I'm not sure if she is monitoring this thread, but one of our members, Anne McCombs, is a Smithsonian restoration specialist at the Gerber Facility.

From what years? I did the same thing! I was there from 80 to 83 in the same chapter! I was the guy who was the auctioneer for the model auctions. Small world. That was a great club and we all had a good time in each others company.
