Planes of Fame 8/4/18

10:00 AM August 4, 2018 PLANES OF FAME Chino, California

Guest speaker: Tuskegee Airman Lt. Col. Robert Friend

The North American P-51 Mustang was on display and performed a flight demonstration.

This was also Junior Aviator's Day!
Kids 11 years of age and under were admitted FREE with paid adult.

Following paragraph copied from the PoF Advertisement:

“After receiving his wings as an Air Force Pilot, Mr. Friend was promoted to a Lieutenant and at that time was assigned to the 332nd Fighter Group as a pilot under Col. B.O. Davis, Jr. He was then sent to Schlfridge Air Force Base in Michigan for flight tactical aircraft transition before his combat tour. In 1943, Lieutenant Friend reported to the European Theatre of War as a member of Tuskegee Airmen’s Distinguished 322nd Group, which was a Fighter Pilot Organization. As a skillful pilot of the P47 and P51 single engine planes, Lieutenant Friend flew as the wing man for the Commander of the group, Col. B.O. Davis. Lt. Col. Friend also served as Combat Operations Officer at the Squadron and Group levels. In this capacity he was responsible for planning and organizing the implementation of strategic and tactical air missions for the organization.”

During the question and answer period Lt. Col Friend was asked if he ever lost a
B-17 during one of his missions. “Yes, and I saw seven chutes.”

A restored P-51 “Bunny” with Lt Col. Friend’s markings was also on display. The left horizontal stabilizer had Tuskegee airman autographs on its surface.

Kids had tons of fun launching soft rockets by jumping on an air filled plastic bottle attached to what looked like PVC piping. Some of the flights were over four stories high.

At noon we gathered to witness the start up of a P-51 that taxied away then shortly appeared overhead giving us several passes to see and also hear the sounds only a P-51 makes.
