Pacific War 18 April Anniversaries

On this day 77 years ago, 18 April 1942, a formation of 16 B-25 medium bombers led by U.S. Army Air Forces Colonel James Doolittle took off from the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Hornet to bomb Tokyo, Japan, the first counterstrike directly against Japan since the Pearl Harbor attack of 7 December 1941. The raid raised American morale and had a longer-range strategic effect since it led to the Japanese attempt to capture Midway Island in order to prevent future threats against the home islands from the Central Pacific. This led in turn to the Battle of Midway in June 1942, in which U.S. Navy aviators sank four Japanese aircraft carriers, blunting the Japanese offensive and setting the stage for the Allied counteroffensive in the South and Southwest Pacific. The last surviving member of the raid, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Cole, co-pilot of Doolittle’s Aircraft No. 1, died last week on 9 April 2019 at the age of 103.

It was also on this day a year later, 18 April 1943, when U.S. Army Air Forces pilots shot down Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku, the Commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet and the force behind both the Pearl Harbor and Midway attacks.

We owe a debt, we cannot pay.
Of those of us, who only pray
Our sacrifices
Can rival that day.

Freedom comes
from those who will
promise their lives
So that we may still
soldier on to remember them
their sacrifice of life and limb.

So on this day
many years ago
let us lift a toast
and remember them.
