Sounds great Don. Never been to anything like that, nor am I likely to - nothing like that here!

Does anyone run trade stalls at functions like that?

Do the Forces use the venue to recruit?

Set up complete

This afternoon, Linda Kemp, Jack Colin, and the four plank holders of the Paper Modelers at Army Heritage Days event: Rick Steffers, Greg Perry, Kevin Stephens, and I, along with Lil and Greg's dad, Dave), set up the tables and the models under the watchful eye of Karl (Bloody Knife) Warner (k.warner in this Forum), the Official USAHEC Paper Modeler Wrangler.

Just as we were getting ready to leave for the Café Bruges, I was very happily surprised to see Ray Smith (Texman in this Forum, also known to me as The Flyboy) and his wife DeAnna walk into the room. Ray had been planning this trip from the American Southwest for several months, but had kept it secret from all except Rick.

It is great to have Ray and DeAnna with us.

We had a festive dinner, as you can see. From left clockwise around the table: Cici, our waitress (who was supposed to take the picture with Jack's camera, but he turned the tables), Linda Kemp, Lil Boose, Don Boose, Ray Smith, DeAnna Smith, Rick Steffers, Greg Perry, Dave Perry, Kevin Stephens. Behind the bar in the background (orange arrow) is Chantal, the manager of the Café Bruges.

Tomorrow, Peter Ansoff, John Dell, Don Weeks (rockpaperscissors), and Bob Fleming will join us.

Miles - We're sorry that you couldn't be with us this year. Hope to see you next year.

Joe - Thanks for the good wishes. Kevin has some of your TinPaper tanks on display, as he has every year since we inaugurated this event.

Isaac - Thanks. It looks like it will be a good event. Any time this group of paper modelers gets together, it's a good event, regardless.

Kevin - There are many trade stalls, as well as a major used book sale sponsored by the Army Heritage Foundation. I'm not sure if Army recruiters are present, but USAHEC does its best to inform young people - as well as all the members of the public - about the Army. The USAHEC motto is, "Telling the Army's story, one Soldier at a time."

More later,

Don

I will post many images either tomorrow evening or Monday morning, but just four for now.

Dinner at Bruges last night, this time with Jack Colin.

Group image: Rick Steffers, Peter Ansoff, John Dell, Don and Lil Boose, Linda Kemp, DeAnna and Ray Smith, Don Weeks, Greg and Robyn Perry, Kevin and Maureen Stephens. Bob Fleming was behind the camera, and I have no idea where Jack Colin was.

Karl Warner, who, in addition to being the Programs and Education Historian, has been the Official USAHEC Paper Modelers Wrangler since 2010, with Ray (Texman) Smith, who gave him his Forum nickname of "Bloody Knife: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/m.../k-warner.html

Kevin asked if any recruiting took place during this event. Linda attended an informal ceremony in which four young citizens of Carlisle took the oath of enlistment into the U.S. Army today during Army Heritage Days.

More later,

Don

First Batch of Images

Paper Modelers at Army Heritage Days Part 1

It may take me a couple of days to get my images posted, but here are a few to start the process.

These initial images show the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in the quiet dawn before the public arrived, Rick Steffers arriving early, a few shots of our tables, and a few shots of the History Trail. I will follow tomorrow with pictures of each of us and our models, then will show some images of our visitors and a few shots of the many living historians and re-enactors. I have captioned all the images, so they should be self-explanatory.

The last image relates to KevinWS’s question about forces’ recruiting. There are no recruiters at the event in an official capacity, but as I mentioned previously, four volunteers for the Army took their oath of enlistment during the event and recruiting is handled historically: there is one permanent video exhibit of an Army recruiting film with information about famous commanders of Army Recruiting Command, including General Maxwell (Mad Max) Thurman who, in 1979 came up with the Army recruiting motto “Be all you can be.” He later became Commander-in-Chief, United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) and planned and executed Operation Just Cause, the 1989 invasion of Panama.

Many more modelers and model tomorrow!

Don

Now that I am retired, I need to work on a visit to this event. Good seeing some familiar faces.

All the best folks.
